I've recently purchased a set of decals in 48th scale for the tomcat.

It's got all the numbers 104,107,114,203 plus vf-1 and two vf-213 all names,  but it also has the bu numbers 160685, 160681, 160665, 160694, 160695, 

Nice looking set, but no instructions as to paint colour or which numbers go with which aircraft, any ideas folks

IIRC numbers were changed on aircrafts during the filming, however these are some of the correspondances that were seen

160665 was 114 of VF-1, crewed by Maverick and Goose

160681 was 104 of VF-213, crewed by Iceman and Slider

160694 was 114 of VF-1, crewed by Maverick and Merlin

160685 was 110 and later 203 of VF-213, crewed by Cougar and Merlin

On the Fightertown Decal sheet it gives the following

 

160685 as 104 of VF213crewed by "Iceman and Slider". The instructions also mention that this aircraft flew with the proper VF-213 badge on the tail, that is not well known or noted in the film.

160681 as 211 of VF213 also crewed by "Iceman and Slider".

160665 as 114 of VF-1 crewed by "Maverick and Goose". The instructions also state that 160694 as 114 was associated with "Maverick and Merlin" for the end sequence.

160695 as 203 of VF-1crewed by "Cougar and Merlin".

 

Hope that this is of some help and not adding to the confusion of which aircraft was which.
