Joint Light Tactical Vehicles for the UK

Well no UK manufacturer had anything viable, so no point them moaning.  The nearest thing made in the UK is Foxhound, which was not the answer to MRVP and cost about 3 times the available budget.  Also, by buying with the US we got a unit price based on tens of thousands of units, not just the few hundred we wanted.  A degree of US inter-operability is also ensured.  You can bet your life that JLTV will become as successful and ubiquitous as HMMWV.  When we buy something unique we pay all the non-recurring costs on small volumes, which works out expensive.  Then any other buyers get the benefit.  In theory we get a rake-off on any subsequent sales where we funded development, but that is usually waived in order to get the sale.  The lawyers' interpretation of procurement law also made it incredibly and unnecessarily difficult to run a competition in the way that made best sense to get best value, and buying FMS from the US is exempt from procurement law.  Roll on the day when Westminster is in charge of public procurement policy, not Brussels.
