Airfix Westland Sea King HU5

Recommended Posts

I've not been on BM much recently so it's great to catch up with this epic build. It's looking superb with some paint on. I also bought some of those HGW rivets with high expectations to use on my Airfix Gazelle but was bitterly disappointed with them. In the end I didn't use them as I could see that they wouldn't show through paint. Instead I used Archer rivets which perhaps swing a little too far in the other direction but at least they are still visible on the finished model.

Thank you Nigel, I know what you mean with the HGW rivets, shame really as they were a good idea.

More masking up again, this time the tail area anti slip paint. Again with MRP, its great for this kind of thing as it's dry in minutes.

Thank you all for the comments and the likes chaps, its all appreciated :D

Masked up the sponson top anti slip and the tail sections, one needs a bit more work on it as its not wide enough yet.

I still have to sort out the medium sea grey around the doorway yet and the radome, in pictures the GRP cover looks a bit lighter than the rest

of the airframe so i'll do that on my build. I have a set of masks for the exhaust areas that still need sorting out.

Cheers

Cheers Roger :D

Moving on to the smaller parts, main landing gear, cabin door and the sponson struts are now done.

Hi Andy,

It's Mr Hobby H318 Radome, its just had one thinned down coat so far, it paints a bit like Tamiya paint so I'm building them up rather than making masks.

The front two will get sprayed rather than brush painted, not forgotten them mate :analintruder: They are just easy to mask up and spray.

Regards

First sponson almost done. The main gear leg is not glued into position yet hence why its swinging down, I'll lock it into place later on

as part of the last assembly.

Some touching up on the floatation bag is required.

A few more details painted up and the spot light added to the sponson.  I made the light from a disk of thin aluminium punched out and added a drop of acrylic glue from one of those new pens that you cure with a UV light.

FLIR mount gets some paint and the two other radio related boxes on the nose.

And you say this is 1/72?! Wow! I'm sorry I've missed this, but at least that means I can digest the previous 18 pages and really enjoy it.

I really, really like the red (orange?) - very eye-catching, but not as retina-scorching as day-glo.

Noticed that some Sea Kings have slight colour variations with some panels, I've got the masking out again

and added some to my build. I've lightened up the GRP part of the radome but its probably not enough yet,

I'll probably have another go at that later.

Corrected the pipework that goes into in back of the sandfilter as per the Haynes book, its a real godsend for pictures of the small details :D

Added a few more lighter panels as per my Ref pictures, I'll probably be doing ZA166 No 16 from 771 Sqn

Cheers chaps,

I’ve extended the anti slip on the sponson out riggers as mine are a tad to short, I’ve also finished the second gear leg, just needs the wheels added.

Hopefully get more done tomorrow
