Airfix Westland Sea King HU5

Recommended Posts

Funny enough I've just removed part of the strake, plan is to rebuild using plastic card at the right angle

to the fuselage. Twas a right royal pain to not damage the radome.  Some imperfections have been filled with Mr Surfacer.

That was a bit of a faff, the strake is added, I managed to get a bit more of an angle

to the thing but it was a right pain to get fixed on the fuselage, two parts from plastic card.

Looks a bit better, I've got to add the underside part of the bracket yet though and tidy it all up.

Cheers Chaps,

Gotta say it, Andy your help is greatly appreciated fella, I know as much about these Sea kings as most people know about

about Nuclear Physics, Now I've spent many a happy hour or two being taxied about in the back of these cabs but never really paid

any attention to the details.

So back to the build, I've added the support to the strake, it need a bit of blending in yet but again the basics are now present, the glue is still drying.

The real thing looks as crude as my attempt so I'm happy that I'll not have to spend too much more time on it

One of the next big jobs is to rivet the airframe, I'm plucking up the guts to have a crack with the HGW rivets :o

I'm a bit worried that the masking up for the two colours might remove any that are in the area of masking TBH so

I'll have to have a test run on some scrap.

Cheers all

Only managed to get the cockpit upper windows sprayed in the clear colours, a mix of Tamiya blue and green .

OAT probes next :o This could really make a mess of the front window so I'll have to take it a bit easy with the drill.

Hi Dan, the strake is looking much better, a difficult item to capture. On my Revell kit build of an 849 cab, I just used the kit item, doesn't look the best but it was hole filler in my display...

Cheers Colin,  It's a difficult shape to make conform to the fuselage and keep it looking right.

So I've managed to get the OAT probes in place on the front screen, I drilled two micro holes, masked up and sprayed the mounts

NATO black, I'll add the silver colour metal bases once the thing is painted up and I'll add the probes from tooth brush bristles last, I have two bristles in place

just to check the diameter of the small holes. And yes the holes are off a fraction :o The holes that I masked up were cut from my 0.7 punch set, gives you an idea on the size of it,

the holes drilled must be around 0.2 ish for the probes.

My crap phots should show it in all of its glory

I've noticed that I have a small crack in the bottom left of the screen ... nothing I'm going to do about that TBH, the canopy has had a rough time, I've Kleared it, stripped it as it kept pooling up

re Kleared it.. Stripped it again , tried using that awful stuff Gauzy agent so stripped it again and finally tried to polish it up. It almost broke me TBH :drunk: I should of just left it as is.. lesson learnt the hard way.

It looks rubbish under a macro lens and poo-poo lighting, but from a distance its okay.

Had an hour today so masked up the front office, a bit fiddly getting the parts glued  in place with no gaps.

Some need filling as I couldn't quite get rid of them all, I’ll drop some Micro Krystal clear into the gaps and hope for the best.

Cheers everyone for the great feedback :D

So I have an hour or so at the bench today so I'm cracking on with getting the airframe up to priming, cockpit area gets some NATO black for the inside

framing, I'm hoping that its not leaked anywhere on the inside :worry:

And with the filter in place.

I've got more detail to add to the fuselage yet and then primer.

Adding the grab handles around the Observers window, I used the Aber tie down set as these looked close

enough to use for them.

They still need cleaning up a little with a fibre glass pencil to remove some of the CA glue around the join.

Cheers

Cheers Nigel,  I did think about it TBH but changed my mind on the wipers ;)

So a first pass with some primer, this is just to check any imperfections of which there are a few, I have to revisit some joins and some filled areas as they

are a little rough.

Then a get another top coat of primer on and a polish up before the riveting job :D

Enjoy

15 minutes ago, moaning dolphin said:

Looking sweet! Not seen those etched handles, they look really nice, much better than the wire I used!

Bob

Cheers Bob,

They are actually etched tie downs for 35th scale armour but do pass as reasonable handles in 72nd scale, they are not that expensive and one set will last

you a lifetime of Sea King builds
