Airfix Westland Sea King HU5

Recommended Posts

Cheers Colin, the book won't disappoint fella, its a real gem of info aimed at the HU5, just wish I had got it before

I started this build off. I'll be replacing the tie downs with some wire that's for sure  I have the PE versions but they look a little 2D for my liking.

So bottom hull is now glued up, I'm thinking that all the detail I added has caused a bit of a fit problem, nothing serious but a little shimming is required

to get it looking better.

Cheers Kev,  Not so much in the mince pies but other nice delights :o

So almost back to pre drop status now, pilot is back in the seat but I've noticed that one of the rudder pedals has come adrift, I found it before it was lost forever

which is relief.

Starting to look like a Sea King now, canopy Kleared up and test fitted, next up will be to spray the top

windows in the clear colours.

Not had much time today on the build but I did manage the bungee cord for the door opening of the sea tray.

I used the Uschi rigging cord 0.05 MM OD, quite small indeed :D

With it being elasticated I can slip it off for paint :D

Again only an hour on the build today, I've made a start on

the crew step under the main cabin door, bodged from the HC4 step

that came with the Eduard PE set and some wire.

Not to give you any bad ideas, but I would consider removing the molded windshield wipers, polishing up with some micromesh, and then scratching something up from wire and PE. What do you think?

I did think about it mate and I’ve got the Eduard PE wipers from the HC4 set but I think it’s more work than it’s worth fella, a bit of careful painting and the kit wipers should be fine :D

Fair enough, looks like you know what you're doing! Keep at the great work!

I’m inclined to agree about the wipers, especially in this scale; those moulded ones look pretty OK, actually.

Are you going to try to OAT gauge probes in the centre windscreen...?  [Just asking...!]

OAT gauge probes are on the list fella, :D

One question though if I may, the inside of the cockpit side windows are they black as per the rest of the cockpit or yellow?

I've seen some ( my ref photos )and I think are only on the RAF HAR3's as the outside is painted that nice high viz yellow.  Just want to make sure that running with black

is the correct colour. My thought process is that they are jettisonable in case of an emergency and yellow would be a good way of highlighting an exit to the crew ?

Cheers

Assuming you are building an NVG cab (and if your cockpit is black, then you must be), then it's all black forward of the jump seat (i.e. all of the pilot bits).  As you can see from glimpse of red window, this is the inside of an RN SAR aircraft, left-hand pilot's seat.

Your reasoning is correct, though; the yellow is nothing to do with the RAF yellow SAR aircraft - all ASW Sea Kings (not sure about Junglies) have yellow insides to the jettison-able section of the pilots' windows, which is to make them easier to find underwater if the worst happens.  This simple measure has saved more than one life in its time.

Adding the brackets for the crew step today, its been cleaned up a bit and more parts being added.

And added the sea anchor shackle to the underside of the nose.

Still got a bot of cleaning up of the lower and upper hull yet.

Cheers Willy,

They really show it very well, those phots should be a great help fella

Apologies if I'm stating the blindingly obvious: to my eye it looks like Airfix have made the upwards angle of the forward (radome) end of the strake a gentle upwards slope whereas the Willy's pictures suggest that it rises in a couple of distinct upwards steps; it also looks like Airfix have only depicted the strake as a horizontal structure whilst it reality it has a noticeable 90o right angle element where it attaches to the fuselage.
