British carrier deck color

Recommended Posts

I'm working on a post war HMS Eagle and am wondering what color the non-flight deck surface color was? Was it the same light grey as the vertical surfaces or was it the predominant color of the flight deck, be it green or grey?

From memory, the Eagle's side and island decks were grey.

This model plan, dated 1962, appears to confirm this as being light blue grey; however, due to wear and tear I would think the walking areas would be a darker grey.  I have seen however, a photo of HMS Ark Royal (post modernisation) with green decks on the island's top deck.

Using this thread to ask another question:

I wish to put my Westland Wyvern on a small deck section of HMS EAGLE in 1958, but am in doubt about the deck colour - does anyone know a good match for "Dark Grey-Green" (see above).

Or did the carrier have grey flight deck sections as well? And if so, what shade would be appropriate for those?

Difficult to tell from this photo quite when it was taken - I suspect late 60s/early 70s, but it clearly shows a very dark grey launch/recovery area with a lighter, but still dark grey manoeuvring area:

This one, which is earlier, supports that colour scheme:

However, this photo, which is captioned 1958, definitely shows a darkish grey launch/recovery area with a grey/green manoeuvring area:

This one which will be similar era seems to show the same:
