1/6 Spiderman by Horizon

Recommended Posts

Yeah another one!!! Its a comission that finally got the go ahead this week and im saving for a holiday so needs must and all that.

But its really cool to work with the proper kit after the two recasts, and this is being done as spiderman so no mods (and no filling web details!!!!! :D )

Flash has been removed and i cleaned up the bits as coffee had been spilt on them (not by me!)

You can see here the detail is pin sharp, chalk and cheese compared to the white repops.

And after just holding some bits together the clouds parted and the modelling gods smiled because the fit looks really good so minimal filling work required. Now theres karma in action!

Not done much with it yet just wanted to kick off the wip, next I'll get the plaster in for weight and begin the pinning stage.

Thanks for looking, more soon :)

OH :wtf:  !!!!

Photobucket have changed their T&C's so that you can only do 3rd party sharing with a premium account that costs $400 a year!! So forget that.

Sigh, I think for now I'm going to switch to another much better and FREE service and I'll gradually update my finished model topics.

So please bear with me, why I ever went with photobucket when I frist started doing this I'll never know and now I'm kicking myself!!

So bare with me chaps while I get pics swapped over

Looks like a very nice kit compared to the recasts. Good luck with this one.

Looks like Photobucket has made a lot of enemies with their new T&C`s, all my threads are black as well now. moving over to flickr for the moment as most of my updates are done via my phone and the flickr app works very well.

so what's the story behind this particular kit - I'm not familiar with it but it looks like a vintage Horizon kit from looking at that sheet displaying some other Horizon dinosaur figures which I have and have spent a small fortune on based on their ages which date back to 1991 ish - do I assume this kit is an old original which is costly and hard to find - hence your comments about fit etc??

Yeah i noticed when i checked your hyper mega cannon build, its truly gutting isn't it? But yeah i went to flickr too, its way better than photobucket, only small thing is i wish you could get the IMG codes through the app. I did all my pixs and updates through my phone, but its cool just using the computer more now.

Yeah its an original Horizon kit, the guy I'm building it for is a big time spidey fan but never got round to building it due to wanting it to look better than he thought he could achieve.

Which is nice for me, love the opportunity to work with original vinyl kits because yeah they can cost a fortune now or just be plain unavailable!

Right time to bring another wip back to life!

I'm feeling like my mojo is totally back now after the whole photobucket atom bomb and getting the scarlet spider comission done, so time to get this comission done too!

So the plaster was mixed and poured in, and supported the bits to keep it all levelish and to avoid spills

And once that had a day to dry (i like to be sure!) I began the pinning process, drilling holes and then trimming some thick wire which is superglued in.

Started with the thighs onto the crotch part, forgot to take a pic but for these I used two bits of wire for strength per joint, but for the rest as the fit is so good; I want to be able to get the joins as spot on as I can which is much easier when you just use one section of wire.

For the right leg which is bent, the lower leg is mot as straight forward as the other joins; but this is kit number three for me so forewarned is forearmed!

I drilled an almost horizontal bit of wire which I bent so it lays along the thin bit of plaster with contact for extra strength, and then using a load of superglue whacked it in place.

So all bits are glued together now and pinned

36753778216_eb24cc4ce8_c.jpg20170824_134426 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

Break from the norm with this kit is this time I'm keeping it in two sections for painting, one because its easier to deal with but also because the join wont need to be filled as its where red meets blue and should have a black line between anyway. The other great thing about doing the proper kit is as you can see from this update the fit is amazingly good compared to the recasts I've been dealing with so I'll only need to fill the hip joins and the arm join just in the armpits, so hurrah!!

Next Up I'll start filling and may trim the waist just to ensure its as good as it can be when I get them together after all painting.

Thanks for looking, more soon :)

Update! Been using filler to sort out the joint gaps, and after the insane amount of milliput I was using to fill web detail on the other spidey builds this feels like heaven!

Just using good old squadron white for this bit of filling, and after a couple of rounds of sanding priming and sanding its almost there already.

Right! Time to stop procrastinating and get on with spidey, I've been stalling because the two sections dont fit together as well as I'd like (typical its the only join that doesn't!) but I've decided I'll just get the basic colours down and then just fill it after and touch up the paint.

But anyway, I re-sanded the hip joins and after checking with primer it just needed more filler so I smeared some over.

37157658782_73a2f14543_c.jpg20170905_133632 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

The sanded the hell out of it again and sprayed more primer, I'm using white now so I can keep my colours strong.

36492515844_67ac55f789_c.jpg20170906_134652 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

Then just to make painting easier I drilled some holes for thick gauge wire and after stuffing it with milliput I rammed it in with copious amounts of super glue

37157643682_6e5647fef0_c.jpg20170913_133448 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

Then gave both halves a good blast of white primer

37139687716_b7fb888bbc_c.jpg20170914_134749 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

And then today in my lunch break I made a start getting the red down, didn't get it all done because my airbrush had a bit of a blockage and it took a bit of time to sort out, but I'll get it sorted tomorrow. I really want this build done by the end of the month so I'm trying to get a wriggle on!

So next up its finishing the red and then when its dry it'll be masking out and laying down the blue.

Thanks for looking, more soon :)

Love the red too :)

 Thanks Will! And yeah I'm actually very happy with the red, I've got in the lazy habit of rattle canning on cheap gloss red on the last couple of spideys so it was nice to get the airbrush out, and I think the finish on the x7 red is so much nicer!

And I made a start on the masking today, once I've finished that I can get the blue down.

Update! I have got all the masking done on his torso, which was a bit trickier than I thought it would be due to all the bumpy muscles but it all got done fine. As tedious as it can be I find masking out quite relaxing.

I find using kitchen roll wrapped around larger areas saves on masking tape, and looks funnier! :D

Then I sprayed down my blue

37359584852_a029f0d1c8_c.jpg20170928_134335 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

Then it was my favorite bit, removing the masking tape; so satisfying!

Had some tiny bits of red that came of with the masking tape which I touched up with a brush, and a little bit of overspray, but I'm happy with it, its making me feel like I'm getting somewhere now!

Next up I'll mask off the red on the legs and spray them blue too.

Thanks for looking, more soon :)

Cheers Brian!

I've managed to get his legs masked out, and more blue sprayed on

36781814023_69ed8baa3b_c.jpg20171002_135124 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

Then I pulled off the tape and it worked pretty well, just a tiny bit of overspray to patch over on his ankle

36763237994_3d56e7c8eb_c.jpg20171003_132104 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

And now he's balanced precariously in a paper cup while the two halves dry after more wiring and a big blob of of milliput in between with a ton of superglue

36763238014_687a1ffa33_c.jpg20171003_134205 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

I'm a little annoyed because the blue has come out slightly lighter on the legs, its my own stupid fault because there was a lot more red covering the torso which obviously affects the colour. I'm not too worried though as I think shading on the legs and highlighting on the torso will balance the whole thing out.

Thanks for looking, more soon :)

blimey this takes me back! I built this about 15-18 years ago. I drew very thin web lines on the costume with an indelible ink black pen, very tricky. This along with the Horizon Thing, Ghost Rider and Wolverine (yellow costume) still reside on my comic book shelf. I've still got the "mullet" Superman half built in the stash. Very well made kits, always wanted the Cable Kit... one day!

Yeah my plan is to use an edding 0.03 fine liner for the webbing, fits nicely in the grooves but webbing on a spidey model is always arduous!

And yeah the Cable kit is very nice, thats on my 'would like' list :)

What about using that Tamiya black panel liner, it flows really nicely in the grooves and you can easily clean up any little application blobs.

This is looking fantastic by the way!

Thanks Meteors! I'd not heard of that so looked it up, looks very handy but some of the panel lines are going to need redrawing and sorting out, cant really rescribe vinyl very well so I think the pens my best option.

Fair enough. Bear it in mind for future projects, it's a very nice product. Put down a coat of varnish and then touch the applicator brush that's in the panel liner bottle to a line (or webbing) junction, and the capillary action sucks it along with very little mess. Bit of cleanup with a cotton bud and some enamel thinners, and you're good to go. I used it on a bandai A-Wing with minuscule panel lines and it came up a treat. Good luck with old webhead!

Yeah will definitely bear it in mind. You know, its really irritating that I've worked on a few spidey kits of different brands and not one has ever been suitable for a simple panel wash, i guess the webbing is tricky to mold.

Oh and justva quickie to show spidey together and dry
