Revell DC-8 50

I've been on the hunt for one of these for quite a while. I built one over 20 years ago and would like to have another go. It's not too bad a kit for its age.

I can't seem to find any anywhere. Anybody got any idea where one could be sourced?

It's long out of production.  All I can suggest is keeping an eye on eBay and the second-hand specialists like Kingkit.  Be prepared to pay a premium price.

As far as I remember the DC-8-50 was boxed simply as "DC-8" while the -61 was boxed as "DC-8 Super 61" or "DC-8-61F/63F" depending on issue.  I'm pretty sure both kits were produced in Mexico under the Lodela name so if you see a Lodela "DC-8" it should be the same plastic as the Revell DC-8-50.

Don't forget that Welsh Models make various versions of the DC-8 including the -52 which might be a more practical option.

That's correct Dave. I have one in the stash but it's the super 61

I have an unbuilt DC-61/63 in the stash. I bought it at the same time as the 50 (around 1990).  I built the 50 but not the 61/63. I have a set of Air Spain decals that I would love to apply to a short fuselage 8. Air Spain used very early 20s - which had JT4 engines with those odd separate ring structures behind the engine.

Braz BZ4094, bought a couple of sets recently for some Revell DC8-60s in my stash that are to be cut down to 30/40 series. I'm still trying to work out if the Conway powered 40 used the same nacelle as the JT4D on the 30, they certainly look very similar unlike those on the 707-320/420.

Not sure about the short fuselage Revell DC8 but the stretch is a bit overscale, supposedly around 1/140.

Keep looking on ebay.

They show up there occasionaly but most of them aren't cheap.

Prices vary between 50.- to 100.- USD depending the boxing.

I have a few sets of engines for the DC-8-50 in my spares stash,if you find a DC-8-10 Revell kit I could help you out with a set to make a -50

Thanks for the offer. I really want to do an AIr Spain 21 at some time.

I have a built Revell DC-8 11 which I finished in Eastern colours. I made it 27 or so years ago so I don't regard it as being to a decent standard. Plan B would be to strip it back to the bare [plastic and repaint the whole thing - and replace the engines with Braz alternatives.
