Avro Vulcan 1/48

Recommended Posts

Hello All,

I have decided to start my first WIP  thread. It will concern Avro Vulcan in 1/48 scale.

As no manufacturer makes a kit of this aircraft in this scale, the model will be built from scratch. I started with measurement(as precise as possible) of the model in 1/48 scale, using scaled-down pictures of real aircraft, as a base.

Next, I made fuselage bulkheads from a sheet of styrene. In this case, I used a cardboard model of the plane as the template, again rescaled to 1/48.

First bulkheads glued up.

In the nose and the tail,  the styrene tubes were installed to strengthen and make the whole structure stable. They will be removed later after installation of all bulkheads.

The next step, after all the bulkheads are installed, will be a construction of a bomb bay. This will make the fuselage rigid and inflexible.

I love a good scratchbuild, and the Vulcan, so will be watching this one with great interest.

I'm hoping Sanger doesn't make us wait too much longer for his kit, as the Aeroclub ones are like hen's teeth and even if you do manage to stumble upon one you'll need to remortgage the house!

Little progress. Next bulkheads installed, and some fuselage surface too.

Before making the bomb bay ,I must make the fuselage surface in the area where air-brakes are located. Unfortunately, I have neither any good pictures of the inner side of the air-brakes, nor air-brakes’ wells. Can anyone help me?

There are air inlets on top surface of the fuselage, visible on some pictures near air brakes. Does anyone know if they were positionable or open permanently?

Hi, I believe these were always open, I don't have my trusty "The Vulcan Story" to hand at the moment so I couldn't tell you what they are for- I know the inlets near the front of the tail were for de-icing (?)

As for the upper surfaces showing the airbrake, hope this helps:

Kind regards,

Now this will be seriously silly but your introductory building is very impressive!

I love watching scratch-building experts at work and i admire your forward planning.

Is there sufficient plasticard on the planet for this one? It will be huge in 1/48th!

Just wondering if you are going to need a practical wing spar running through there to stop the weight of the wings drooping?  Might not be prototypical but that much plasticard may need it.  Looks great though.

Uh-huh... that's quite smart. I'm considering doing the same with the wings on my Aeroclub vac-form example, now that there's a much better (more exact) contour gauge by Hobby Elements out in the market. I'm planing to replicate the spars inside each wing before gluing both halves to then attach them both to the fuselage.

Come to think again, I'd like to replicate the bomb bay for an open bomb bay door aircraft as well.

Hello again.

Thank you for all the comments and positive attitude. The pictures of airbrakes are very helpful. And next question: are upper and ventral air-brakes the same? Or different?
Little progress so far as you can see in the attached pictures. I would like again to ask for some help. Does anyone have any pictures of the bottom of the fuselage, near ventral air-brakes, showing how the shape/profile of the fuselage changes, looking from the tail toward the nose of the aircraft?

Best regards.
