Hello

I know Tomcats had been phased out as a first-line fighter some time ago, but what about F-14Ds in reserve units? Cheers

Jure

As Nigel already said there are no flying Tomcats left in the US. Small bit of trivia, actually the reserve units never got the F-14D, they only had the A variant.

Of the 4 original USN reserve units flying the Tomcat, 3 were disestablished in 1994, well before the Tomcat was retired. VF-201 converted to the Hornet in 1999 so that the Tomcat only continued in service in frontline units, with the reserve squadrons all flying Hornets

Is this an updated remake or a sequel?  If its a sequel, Young Maverick became an Instructor at Top Gun, which is now not in california at all, and has been busy training the new Top Guns.  In fact Pete Mitchel (55) is probably an Admiral by now and flying a desk or a Private contractor if he wants to say in the hotseat - and is desperately trying to stop the new Top Gun students doing a fly-by of Peggy Benjamin's daughter..  There is bound to be a new love interest especially as 'Charlie' 'came out' in 2009.  I would guess at some point Maverick is called back to the front line as being the only man in the entire community of US Naval Aviators able to fly either the F18E or F35C in whatever situation they need to be in to combat the massive threat to the Carrier group and the USA.  I can't remember now but a think a single aerial victory would make Pete Mitchel an Ace, is that the first since the Vietnam War?

Hello

Thank you, Giorgio N, I  did not know that. Only four squadrons of early Tomcats, and all of them disbanded even before the new millennium? Costs of maintaining reserve F-14s must have been sky high.

Quite an entertaining story, Grey Beema. If I can expand your idea a bit further, how about this: Maverick is Inspector of Fighter Aviators and as a perk of his flag rank Navy maintains his heavily reworked and upgraded F-14 (with Goose's hologram as his RIO) airworthy just for his inspection tours. By pure chance Maverick on one such flight over Very Light Brown Sea encounters North Coriander test cruise missile, flying 270° true, with a MiG-28,5 chase plane escort. He promptly shots missile down, as this UAV is clearly a threat to a number of countries, if she continues on this course for another 10.000 or 20.000 km. Chase MiG intervenes and in ensuing dogfight aircraft collide head-on. Maverick ends up in a dinghy with a young North Coriander AF female pilot. Not much follows, however, as over the years his immersion suit from the original Top Gun flick inexplicably shrunk and Maverick is stuck inside. Upon rescue Coriander girl files in request for political asylum and also discreetly inquires about Dr. Charlotte Blackwood, and Maverick is kicked upstairs to deny him any possibility of operational flying again. His Tomcat is located and lifted from the ocean floor by Glomar Explorer, and after repairs continues to serve in her original capacity, however now with holograms in both front and back office. Cheers

Have to say... the flying sequences were great (as several previous posters have mentioned) but the bits in between the flying were utter garbage.

BTW, Kelly Macgillis was openly gay, even around time of Top Gun, which might go a long way to explain why she didn't enjoy a long and fruitful career in Hollywood (that's not a criticism of being gay.... it's simply a reflection of the inherent conservatism of Hollywood as a whole). I can't think of many major Hollywood stars who have "come out" and enjoyed very successful careers after the event (although Ian McKellen, Ellen Page and Jodie Foster seem to have managed continued success after they announced their sexual orientation, so I guess there are some exceptions to the rule).

Wouldn't it be nice if Hollywood could stop living in the 1950's?

Cheers.

Chris.
