RF-84F photoflash fit

I know that the RF-84F flew night reconnaissance missions, with (I assume)  photoflash. I have been unable to find any references in print or pictures, showing the night flash equipment used. Does anybody have any photos or drawings of that equipment and where it was installed?

TIA

If you look here:

http://www.avialogs.com/index.php/aircraft/usa/republic/f-84-thunderjet-thunderflash-thunderstreak/t-o-1f-84-r-f-1-flight-manual-rf-84f-5-and-later-aircraft.html

in Section 4-46 pg162 it mentions the photo flash ejector system, but no pics. Reading about the pod with it's flush doors it almost sounds like they used the shell of a SUU-21 or something similar (MN-1A or Aero-8)  as the pod body.

There's also this pod under the wing of a RF-84F/B-36 parasite project plane: Click me

Pete,

Thanks for that info & link. It appears that the pod may be some kind of tracking/monitoring pod for the refueling system testing.

Larry there was an earlier thread on another forum about the RF-101 using a RF-84 photo flash pod:

most likely the RF-84F carried the same thing.

Thanks Jari,

I seem to remember that post, I just can't remember which forum it was on.

Jari,

Thanks for the link to the RF-84F flight manual. That is one manual that I have not been able to find a free download of. The paragraph mentions carrying 2 pods, one on each "outboard" pylon. I have yet to find any photos of an RF-84F with outboard pylons, only the F-84F fighter version. Maybe they were mounted in the same location?

I guess I will continue to research this subject, before I start on the kits.

Larry if you check out the flight manual link mention is made that the RF-84 could have up to 4 external tanks so the RF-84 would have 4 pylons.

Jari

Jari,

I saw that, but the only photos I have found (3 of them) showing an RF-84 with more than 2 pylons were ones of an RF-84K, and it only had 3 pylons. Plus, the third pylon was in different locations.

Of course just because there are no photos doesn't mean they didn't carry the extra pylons but if not needed they most likely didn't put them on. But on a night photo mission they probably had tanks on the inner pylons and the photo flash pods on the outers or as in case of one of the pics below, a luggage pod.

Jari,

Thanks for the links to those great pics. They will help me figure out the size & location of the outboard pylons.

I just have to do more research on the photoflash pod.

Larry, i saw this at Cybermodeler:

Kitty Hawk has a 1/32 RF-84F planned, maybe they have access to the pod and will include it?

Jari

Jari,

Looks interesting.

My thought on it is if Tanmodel, who had access to a real RF-84F while designing their model, did not include the photoflash pod, I really doubt that Kittyhawk will include it.

One can always hope though.
