Merlin engine variants

Hello,

this question comes out of a want to build an RAAF Spitfire HF Mk VIII with engine, cannon bays, radio, flaps displayed.

Rather than purchase the components separately, I was thinking to purchase the SIN64809 set by Eduard designed for the Spitfire Mk IX.

would this work?

Been scouring the instructions/reviews and noted that parts for the Mk VIII can be found in the SIN64809 set.

Appreciate any references comparing a Merlin 60 (Mk IX) vs Merlin 70 ( HF Mk VIII) engine as well.

Apologies if I got any details wrong.

Cheers,

Shane

Hello, Shane

I understand Merlins 61, 72 and 73 have float carburettor and 66, 67, 70, 71, 76, 77, 85 marks have Bendix injection type carburettor. As a consequence there are some differences in various lines and cables on the aft lower part of the engine. Merlin 66 (and probably all other marks with Bendix carburettor) also has one less control rod and the rest of control rods, cables and pulleys are slightly rearranged.

I am not certain which mark of two-stage Merlins is included in Eduard's Big Sin, but I am leaning towards Merlin 66. Some time ago I found a PDF version of Rolls-Royce Merlin two stage two speed engine maintenance manual somewhere on the web. I learnt about differences, mentioned above, from that manual, which also contains some useful drawings. Unfortunately, I have no idea where I found it. If you send me PM with your e-mail address I can send it to you. Cheers
