The Airfix 1/72 Pucara Takes Flight.

Recommended Posts

I have finally finished.  This kit gave a few problems being fit issues on nearly everything but I have really enjoyed doing it as it gave me a chance to try a few new things.  I am really pleased with the result and after reading references on the Pucara I can see why people loved it.  Anyway here are the photo's and I am sorry there are a few.  Before I forget thanks to everyone for their advice and support through the build which can be found at http://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?/topic/235018470-172-airfix-pucara/

Fantastic Ian,  well done !

Inspires me to work on my Airfix and MPM ones in the stash - I also have an aftermarket decal sheet for international Pucaras too.

Thank you very much for sharing your work with us.

Thanks Colin.  When you do yours I would recommend a book "The Pucara Story" as its an excellent reference.  Its is available from Amazon UK for around £19 and is worth the money. https://www.amazon.co.uk/Pucara-Story-White-MMP-Books/dp/8361421823

Bravo Ian. It's been wonderful to follow along with this build and I've taken away a lot of hints and tips for when I find one for myself. I was sceptical about the massive screw in the belly but, seeing the finished article, I totally get it - a lovely understated display.

Congrats on a fantastic model!

Brilliant looking model and is so well displayed, Very strange no 1/48 scale kit has been issued 😊

Thanks Gerrard.  I think you can get a 1/48 Pucara but they cost around the £50 mark.

Well, there you go - I didn't think anyone, anywhere, had ever built one of these kits, and you have done such a great job on it, well done.

Thanks mate.  I have a few 1/72 Airfix Pucara kits and a Special Hobby one as well.  The sprue's are all from the same moulds but the Special Hobby one has resin and photo etch parts with a better decal sheet than the Airfix one.  One of the Airfix ones is a Airfix Club special with the 25th anniversary livery that looks nice.  With all the bother would I do another?  Yes, no problem.

Thanks Zac.  I prefer to do flying displays as to me it adds a bit of movement if you know what I mean.  For the stands I make them the same way for all my efforts.  For single engines jets I use acrylic rod.  Its cheap and easy to bend.  For multi-engined jet and props I use brass tubing and a bolt.  I normally put a bend in the brass tube with a small Record pipe bender.  This gives you the option trying different flight positions before the final fix.  I also picked brass as I couldn't hide the stand so I thought why bother.  Brass is easy to work with and looks nice when polished.    The base is oak flooring cut and routed.  The oak in a heavy wood and makes a good base.  All in all the stands are cheap and easy to make.  The hardest thing to workout is where about in the fuselage the bolt is going to go.  Older kits are easier due the the lack of interior detail to worry about but its all part of the fun.
