Not sure how many carriers the Argentine Navy had, but here is a Corsair on one! 8be5f867cdffb1f7519d0c1da09ea27c.jpg

At the time one, ARA Independencia, later replaced by ARA Veinticinco de Mayo in 1969 :)

after you first raised it I went off and had a look.

They had two, the first, which the Corsairs operated off was the ARA Independencia V-1. Which was the old HMS Warrior R-31, a Colossus class Light Carrier (1945, 1948 - 1958) plus used by the Canadian navy for awhile as the HMCS Warrior( 1946 - 1948)

The second was the ARA Veinticinco de Mayo V-2 (1968 - 1990), another Colossus class carrier that started life as the HMS Venerable R-63 in 1944 (also from 1948 - 1968 as the HNLMS Karel Doorman, Netherlands).

Plus an interesting selection of aircraft were used of both carriers;

F4U Corsairs

SNJ-5c Texan

Grumman S2F-1 Tracker

F9F Panther and Cougar

A-4Q Skyhawks

T-28 Trojan

Sea Kings

Regarding the F9Fs in Argentina, the Armada bought 28 F9F-2B Panther from the USN in 1957, of which 24 were flown and the others used for spare parts. They didn't really operate from carriers as the catapults on ARA Independencia were't powerful enough to launch the aircrafts safely. However at least one aircraft landed on the carrier during trials.

The Cougars were 2 F9F-8T trainers that were only operated from land bases. Interestingly, while the Panthers were in grey over white, the Cougars were in overall gloss sea blue.

Aircrafts of the Argentinian Navy actually saw quite a bit of action and in 1963 both the Panthers and the Corsairs took part in combat during an attempted coup, with Navy aircrafts attacking Army forces

Go on then.

A suggestion if I may - in addition to the aircraft what about the vehicles that buzz around on deck, tractors, trolleys with bombs and missiles etc. That way those who deal with vehicles can also join the fun?

Trevor

Wardroom Mess Piano - I believe some of these have been known to "buzz around on deck" before making that fateful catapult shot???

The piano was 'launched' as Ark or if you prefer HMS Blue Circle! (R09) was coming home for the last time.

The piano launch is normally associated with a ships 'paying off'.

Could be a good excuse to build my Escort Carrier.

as if you even need an excuse!! That's a nice looking model, defiantly one to watch!

Yes!!  Go n join in with the Escort Carrier.  Which carrier you doing?

....and will you be joining the fun??

Well it's getting closer folks, time to start finalising your builds! For those why have yet to join the fun, theres still plenty of time. The choices for the build are huge, plus you can build a small diorama/vignette of action on the deck. So hit the stash or evilBay and find your next project and join the fun.

Unfortunately for the start of the build i'll be in Malaysia but throw the magic of the internet....with luck, I'll be here for the start!

Yes you are......just forgot to look, #6 actually you were quick off the mark for this GB.

gee you. Have some nice choices there, the Walrus or Firefly would be nice to see, don’t if anyone else will build these. I do know the Walrus (as in 2 of them I think) did for a while operate of an RN aircraft carrier during the war in a SAR role. Think think they may have been either RAN or RAAF aircraft. I’m sure there has been a discussion on this somewhere here....maybe! I’m trying to find out some more info but it’s a bit hard as i’m away from home at the moment. But for general interest sake i’ll try and dig up some more info.

Hi Rich,

There were three Walrus assigned to HMS Victorious and used in the SAR role for the attack on the Japanese Home Islands.  There are a couple of references to their daring do picking up downed pilots from under the noses of the Japanese in "Carrier Pilot" by Norman Hanson.

I know that one of them broke down and could not be recovered.  So once the crew were safe it was used for target practice by the destroyers of the fleet..  I rather like the vintage styling of the Walrus against the Roundel and bar markings...

Having said that I might do Lt Stott's Indefatigable Firefly.  Most people would plump for "Evelyn Tentions" from Implacable but Lt Stott is the only Firefly pilot to either destroy or be involved in the destruction of 5 aircraft in the air..

Oh decision, decisions - the pressure...
