JeffreyK
I recently spent a day enjoying some flying at NAF Atsugi (near Tokyo). my friend Akira-san took me over there and one of his spotter friends kept us updated on the latest intel on what's coming and going. As it was a couple of days before the Atsugi spring Open House festival we were warned that there wouldn't be as much flying as normal ( ), but I was still more than happy. My photography skills aren't the greatest, but here are a few nice ones: New paint job on this CAG Growler: ...and this is what I'd been waiting for: Nice tail art on this Osprey too: Couldn't stay for the Shizuoka Hobby show this year, but perhaps next year... Latinbear
That looks like a pretty good haul for a quiet period! That specially marked Hawkeye is lovely! Thanks very much for sharing these. Did you get any hassle from the local police or base security?
JeffreyK
Thank you. So far I've been to Gifu (Kakamigahara), Hamamatsu, Komatsu and Atsugi in Japan and all of those bases have viewing parks, areas specifically provided for spotting and photography with car parks, benches, structures to provide shade, mounds or steps for better view and even toilets. There is a large aviation enthusiast community over there and it looks like the military and local communities tolerate or even welcome them.
