The Scarlet Spider - Classic Spidey Conversion

Recommended Posts

So once again I'm breaking my cardinal rule and starting a second project while my first is still on the go!

Basically my best mate has done me a few favours lately so i thought as i surprise I'd make him a spiderman model.

I had one hanging around as i made one for him as a comission as spidey 2099  (see below) and he got two at the time in case he had another idea.

So im making this one as The Scarlet Spider, who is Ben Reilly, Peter Parkers clone. I really like his costume and i know its one of my friends favourites.

So I did the usual, got the vinyl bits out and used a heat gun to warm them up and remove the flash.

20170504_135243-1_zps4pak4gii.jpg

And then I mixed up some plaster, and wow for the first time in a long time i mixed a batch that dried perfectly solid!

20170505_131851_zpsdsfncwy3.jpg

20170505_131856_zpsl9pgssad.jpg

Then i started the process of drilling and pinning the limbs together and my god the fit of this one is even worse than the last one i did! But im going to be using so much milliput I'll basically just be sculpting over all the gaps and stepped joints anyway.

20170511_131146_zpslqsavman.jpg

And where there are gaps in between plaster filled bits I've packed them out with milliput/greenstuff

Next up I'll get the limbs pinned on to the torso. For this one im getting the whole thing togethrr before filling all the web detail and gaps, because the fit is so bad i need to make sure the angles of his limbs are all okay and not throwing off the pose.

Thanks for looking, more soon :)

Love these spidey conversions. I feel your pain as well... ive got the same kit and WOW it could almost be used as a training piece for fit corrections. You have more patience than I sir.  Excellent work so far.

nice - I'll follow your build with interest to get some hints and tips from - I've got a stash of the old Horizon vinyl Jurassic Park dinosaurs sculpted by Stan Winston that will benefit from pinning as your have demonstrated here

Oh no, not another one!

Can't wait to see how this one turns out. Bet you're muscles in your forearms will be massive, after all the sanding to come.

How you planning on tackling the hoodie?

oh boy you must love all that filling and sanding, I bet it turns out just as good as the last spidy though.

Yeah im sure reality will hit when im sanding the crap out of it and I'll inevitably ask why the hell i am doi g this again!

Haha yeah it'll definitely be a work out, going to getthe coarsest sand paper i can find!

The hoodie will be sculpted in milliput directly over him, so that instantly removes a large area i don't need to fill/sand (result!) And i think im going to do it hood up, as i think that'll look cool

Okay little update, I've got the arms pinned in place.

Got the right arm in place first ensuring i got it in a position where the flat of the hand is roughly 90 degrees to his face.

20170513_144102_zpscne7fnfz.jpg

Used my same technique, drilled holes for my bits of stiff wire which are superglued at both ends and then squidged in some milliput to give a solid wiggle free joint when its dry.

20170513_144406_zps6ejmju0t.jpg

The left arm isnt load bearing so i just used one bit of wire so i could manoeuvre it a little more as dry fitting haf shown that (gasp!!) This joint was a decent fit and the muscle tone lined up really well.

Now its just drying and then next it will be legs.

Thanks for looking, more soon :)

I'd like to track down the sculptor, who thought it was a good idea to sculpt the web detail on this kit. I'd have a thing or two to say to him.

Looks like he might have been the airfix trench digger in a previous life.

Probably the same dingbat who put raised rivet details on some older helicopter kits!

"Just add a wash and you're done!"

 i wish! You know I've made a good many spidey kits and i don't think I've not just said "oh sod it I'll paint them!" for any one of them!

Okay so, time for the first "damn you vinyl!!!" moment :D

I got the other leg on, but in order for the pose to be right (basically for his head to be straight and fully upright) i had to modify the leg a bit.

20170516_131153_zps75fkrye5.jpg

20170516_131354_zpssmjd8hfj.jpg

And even though I'd have preferred to have two bits of wire i used one so could bend it into place, drown in superglue and then pack ot out with mlliput when its dry.

20170516_133409_zpstj6tqnwz.jpg

Which is what its currently doing, and ive got a hell of a gap left to deal with!

20170516_133425_zpsqttrd1gg.jpg

20170516_133437_zpswmeots54.jpg

So next up comes gap filling and web detail covering, oh joy!!

Thanks for looking, more soon :)

Oohh that's one very gappy crotch.

Looks like he needs another pair of y-fronts on, or some rolled up socks down there.

The last kit wasn't much better,  i think Peter Parker needs to see his GP about his groin problems!

Right made a start on the big gapon his leg.

Started by stuffing in some greenstuff, mainly because its very sticky and will help hold it together as well as pack it out.

20170517_131606_zpscfqse02o.jpg

20170517_131617_zps4veqdyar.jpg

I had some over so i made a start on filling the other huge gap i had, the greenstuff is just there as a foundation for the mlliput when i smear it over.

20170517_132019_zpseh1e9hr1.jpg

And speaking of milliput, mixed up a bit and smeared it over trying to feather the edge as much as possible with wet fingers and smooshing.

20170517_132946_zps4mndrsav.jpg

20170517_132928_zpsprnerhzg.jpg

It looks good at this stage but that will all change when its primed, then its out with sandpaper!

Also as you can see below the pose is pretty good, head upright and bent foot sitting flat on his toes.

20170517_133007_zpskxriwrhv.jpg

Once thats all gone off i can make a serious start on web and gap filling.

Thanks for looking, more soon :)

Just a small update.

Firstly, this is what happens when you press too hard blending in your milliput!  :swear:

20170523_133023_zpstsrvseye.jpg

To be fair i pressed really really hard so im not worried about it being weak.

Did some more milliputting on the legs and then got the leg glued back on.

20170523_132920_zps1fb7yuhz.jpg

20170523_133030_zpsh0jc1qem.jpg

Just taped it in place, and on the plus side the milliput in the joint dried flush with the leg so theres more flat surface for an even better bond, every cloud!

20170523_133534_zpscqmy36mo.jpg

Next I'll continue GENTLY smooghing over the gaps and details.

Thanks for looking, more soon :)

Spidey senses tingle! Leg is back on :)

20170525_131246_zpskly97x3e.jpg

So i got back on with smoothing over the milliput to cover gaps & webbing. I've developed a pretty quick and effective technique; i put some milliput over the area i want covered like this: -

20170525_133035_zpshv7qblgc.jpg

I get my water handy so can have a wet thumb and a dampish thumb, then use the damp thumb to spread it over the detail and the wet thumb to smooth.

20170525_133521_zps3ra0ucuq.jpg

20170525_134801_zpsk2p5njjp.jpg

Re-did the thigh gap on the reattached leg, there are some rough spots where the break smooshed it up and then dried, but i can easily sand that out later.

20170525_133045_zpskkkw59pe.jpg

20170525_134756_zpspicmgzez.jpg

And i made a start smoothing over the face.

20170525_134812_zpsrhzykzzc.jpg

Next up will be - you guessed it - more milliput work!!

Thanks for looking, more soon :)
