james424
Hi All, Another F4 question... I'm just getting up to painting my F4J in the USMC scheme with the blue nose and fuselage surround. I've seen lots of pictures with varying shades of the same colour, but I was wondering if anyone knows if there is one paint out there that's as close as possible to being the same blue that is on the decals? Cheers, James.
mstorin
If you are talking about the VFMA-451 scheme, the blue in Tamiya decals is way too light (you are talking about the 1/32 scale kit, yes?). The links below show photos I've been able that find show the blue to be much darker. CAM used to do a 1/32 scale set with the darker color. I used them to do this scheme and used insignia blue as the closest match to the blue in the decals. The CAM set is out of production, but you may still be able to find it. https://photos.smugmug.com/US-Squadrons-USMC/US-Marine-Corps-Fighter-Attack/VMFA-451-WARLORDS-pictures/i-6Rt9j9B/1/L/F-4USMC 00125 McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom II USMC 153860 VMFA-451 WARLORDS USS Forrestal AA BICENTENNIAL MCAS Beaufort 22 July 1976 military airplane picture by Ray R Leader-L.jpg https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/originals/99/ef/a1/99efa14504c3e265a391884210a5991b.jpg Edited May 9, 2017 by mstorin change embedded photos to links
james424
Mstorin, Wow, that really IS darker than the kit decals. That's almost like a midnight blue! Hmm, will have a look and see what I can come up with. James.
mstorin
I'll keep an eye out for that decal set. I'm sure there got to be some floating around out there.
