Arab-Israeli Wars forum?

11 posts in this topic

I and a friend were wondering whether it might be possible to have a forum dedicated to the Arab-Israeli Wars. They stretch over quite a period - Cold War to ultra-modern, but across that era have various things in common - such as, for instance, the ingenious IDF armour 'conversions'. Unless you're lucky enough to have managed to join IDF-Modelling.com before it became, in effect, a 'closed shop', there really is no forum dedicated to this specialist area of modelling.

So, we were wondering whether a separate forum could be set up here please?

To me, that sounds like a good idea. It opens up not just the armour side of it, which I particularly like, but aviation, figures and naval as well.

Sounds good to me, as long as everyone could focus on the modelling and military only history!

thanks

Thanks guys. Yes, we'd need to keep a careful eye on the 'politics' - basically, politics would have to be a complete 'no-go area'.

Yes, that'd be a good thing - otherwise, one has to wander all over the place looking for Israeli, or IAF or IDF or whatever. And it'd be interesting to see the other stuff.

As for every other modelling theme.

Then we need also a room for:

Falklands

Vietnam

Indochina

IPGW

IIPGW

IIIPGW

Indo/Pak wars

Soccer war

And so on...

There's no end to this, and beside, I do believe that BM is already well organised.

And I forget the tags, together with a powerfull search engine.

There is the nub of the problem, we have this sub forum in Armour, then we get someone wanting Soviet Armour, West German Cold war armour etc.

If it spreads to the Aircraft as well, Falklands, Vietnam, Korea, 7 day war, Suez etc etc.

There are quite enough sub forums already for the limted moderating time we get and there are currently no plans for sub dividing these further.

This idea developed from a bilateral exchange between Phil and I.

I too have been frustrated by being unable for years to join the IDF Modelling website, every (infrequent and short-duration) opening-up to new members has failed to work for me.  I remain with my nose and tongue pressed to the window fogging up the glass while scratching forlornly at it.

We did discover that the Armorama Armour forum can be filtered by various tags, one of which is IDF.  But it doesn't amount to a dedicated forum, just a filter of all the IDF postings.

The Arab-Israeli conflicts since 1947 have been a consistent Hot War during the period of Cold War.  They have fostered extensive AFV development, adaption and improvisation on the iDF side.  Less so on the Arab side, but there are some - such as the various T34 SPG conversions and the Ramses T55 upgrade.  There are myriad IDF kits and conversions out there, with yet more in the pipeline, and many kits able to be used for Arab army vehicles - again with new ones promised.  IDF subjects are extensively modelled, Arab ones less so - perhaps because they are most usually just paint schemes on vanilla Soviet vehicles.  Because of the long duration of that conflict, several generations of AFVs have come and gone - from WW2 leftovers to the very latest state of the art. This gives enormous modelling scope.  Probably more than any other single conflict or era.  Indeed I think it is an era in its own right in the same way that the Cold War is considered to be an era.  But it hasn't ended yet.

Such a forum would also include South Lebanon Army and the various other players in the Lebanese Civil War.  The promised Tiran 4 kits from Takom and MiniArt with be SLA-specific configurations, if the box art is to be believed.  And there are many other SLA and Lebanese subjects, pre and post civil war as well as during.  One of their diesel conversion Firefly VCs with an applique full spaced glacis is on my project list.

You would have to include Jordanian and any other related players.  Would you include former IDF subjects sold to other users, such as the Shermans and Tirans sold to South American countries?

So this idea gets my vote.

I only have one lifetime, and 56 years of it have gone by.  Somewhere in the future I intend to get through this list of Arab-Israeli subjects for which I already have all the kits and parts ..................  Should be done by about 2117!

Tiran 4 early

Tiran 5 late

Tiran 6

APC-55 (SLA)

Achzarit early

M1 Sherman

M50 Sherman VVSS

M50 Sherman HVSS

M60 Sherman (Chilean M50 with 60mm HMVS gun)

M51 Sherman

M51 Sherman Chilean

M32B4 HVSS (yes, more than a little speculative!)

AMX13/90 SLA

Merkava 4 LIC

Namer ARV

BTR-152 IDF

D9 Doobi

Puma late

Nagmachon Doghouse late

Nagmachon

Nagmashot

MUTT Shimira

MUTT Orev TOW

MUTT Orev reloads

Jeep Sufa

Jeep 106mm

Jeep radio

And that's without bothering with Magachs and Sho'ts and half tracks .......

As explained this is a non starter here on Britmodeller. If every modeller starts wanting a forum for their own area of interest then there would be no end to the number of forums.

The structure we have works for the majority of people and we dont see any reason to change it.

I have to agree with the non starter approach not because of the subject simply the floodgates would open for every other conflict going, as there a few folk interested in this often neglected subject and due to the main interest being Armour and Air power why not set up a thread in the general chat area's of the forum for Air and armour and run reference material and link's to build's and RFI's,I'm sure the like minded will soonhome in, I find the Spitfire and Hurricane thread invaluable in a similar way.:2c:
