Italeri US Wrecker Truck 1/24

Recommended Posts

This is my first build of a truck from Italeri and I must say that I'm impressed with what's in the box, 12 sprues of finely detailed parts moulded in 5 appropriate colours plus chrome. The larger body and cab panels are free from sink holes, flow lines and other surface imperfections to the extent that painting is almost unnecessary. But would it look too toy-like if left in unpainted?

Construction begins with the chassis. Some additional work is required, drilling extra holes and slots and cutting off 10mm from the end of each rail.

The crossmembers have positive location points which made assembly straightforward and hopefully without any twisting.

Axles completed. The front wheels are steerable if desired using the heated screwdriver blade method on some very small pins. Not for me, I've fixed them in the straight ahead position.

There's a lot of soft detail on the engine but once fitted to the chassis most of it can't be seen anyway.

That looks really good. Certainly a cool looking truck. I see the box doesn't mention a make but I'm thinking a Ford?

No mention of the make but Ford would be my guess judging from the radiator grill.

Back to the build after a 2 week break in sunny Mallorca :D

Fuel tanks and a few other bits added to the chassis.

The seats have no backs. Guess they can't be seen once the cab is assembled.

More soon.

A little more done on this one, cab assembled. Went together fine although very little contact area for gluing the windscreen in place.

Interior fitted.

Although it doesn't show in this photo, there's a problem with the fit of the hinged hood/bonnet where it meets the cab. The hinge brackets appear to be misplaced, too far forward forcing the hood too far back against the cab. I've checked and double checked the fitting of the brackets and they're exactly as shown in the instructions.

If I remove the hinge pins, the hood fits perfectly.

There's even some bunks included for the crew. The level of detail in the kit is amazing, puts Revell's 1/16 Peterbilt to shame.

This looks like a food truck!

But maybe Italeri got the spelling wrong.

I must say that these kinds of topics are a delight amidst all detailing and scratchbuilding violence to be found on this forum. Of course you could replace some of those engine parts with finer stuff, or add a hinge or two, and naturally it would most probably look slightly better in the end. But my opinion is that in plastic kit modeling 90% of the realism takes 10% of the work and that is what you're doing here. Suppose this kit takes you 60 hours of work... in the end it will look beautiful and only the rivet counters will criticize. But those rivet counters won't visit your home where this truck will be displayed in full pride.

Meanwhile I reckon you're enjoying the full passion of modeling... cutting, glueing and painting; that's what modeling is all about. Or, that's what many of us scratchbuilders who spend 540 hours of work to try to attain that 10% extra realism, may secretly think when watching your progress. I'll admit that I sometimes do, anyway.

The only thing I'd recommend, if I may, is to get rid of any and all traces of the moulding process.

wreck%20chassis5_zpsupojp6fm.jpg

These marks can be simply brushed away using a rounded knife. Won't take long and the end result will really benefit from it.

I'll keep following this build joyfully.

Getting close to final assembly with the 50 ton recovery rotator completed. There's more lights than a Christmas Tree on this truck, 30 at the last count :o
