Half way through but is anyone interested in seeing the remainder of this? It's been on the go for months and has been a :swear: of a build...

Yeah I'd love to see it - any excuse to see a 111 brought to fruition - gotta be one of my favourites me thinks - go for it!!

Ah great stuff! Right better get some WIP pics up then.

Looks like some delightful work, what's this fight you talk off?

Thanks Rob. I'm referring to an old Iron Maiden song; Aces High. Heard it?

Definitely interested. Whose kit is it?

Great! It's Airfix's He 111 P2, part of the BoB 75th Anniversary set.

Right then, on with the show!

As you will have seen from the last post on this, I had completed the underside with some XF-23 and lightened on some of the panels to show some variations. On to the laborious task of masking the Heinkel... That took about an hour and a half to ensure I had got it correct. I used a combination of the Airfix painting instructions but also some pictures of the real thing as I wasn't convinced of the amount of overlap of the splinter camo onto the underside - you'll see what I mean later. After some pre-shading I sprayed XF-73 for the light green and as per usual highlighted. I shouldn't have bothered with the pre-shading as I decided half way through to do some post shading as I wasn't happy with the effect:

Next MORE masking. Good job I bought a job-lot of Tamiya tape! I must confess though, I find masking splinter camo quite therapeutic:

Then air brushed with XF-27 for the darker green. Same techniques of course:

Then left that to cure for a bit...

I can indeed say I have heard it, However not in some time! Loved a bit maiden when I were a lad.

It's one of my Maiden favourites. Sucker for anything with a guitar in it and then when they make the song about the RAF during the BoB, well that's me sold! :guitar:

That is looking the business - have one of these in the stash so checking for any pointers and advice. I'd probably have more than 1 He 111 in the stash if it weren't for HWMBO!!!!!

Ha! They do indeed rule the roost. Mine is already eyeing up my man cave as a nursery :yikes:

Masking removed. Only a couple of minor issues to correct but the highlights and shading blends between the camo which is the main thing:

Just need to correct a little bit around where the ventral turret opening is. You can see this on the last two shots.

Please with the tail section. Tamiya masking tape is second to none!

I used the closed gear doors and bomb bay doors as a cover for the wheel wells saving extra masking.

Finally removed the blu tack from the air vents.

Thanks for looking.

That just keeps looking better and better - can't wait to see the finished article. Can I ask what paints you have used for the RLM 70/71 please?

Cheers! I do love a splinter camo.

Certainly, paints are all Tamiya.

Interior (although I fear this is the wrong shade compared to the real thing) XF-25

Underside XF-23

Light green XF-73

Dark green XF-27

Hth?

That is looking very tasty, great paintwork!

Thanks Simon... I'm toying with the idea of, after the gloss coat and decals, experimenting with the salt weathering technique as they were quite battered and bruised from the constant runs over the channel, the ones that got back that is. I'll need to be feeling brave though as I quite like how she looks at the moment!

Only a small update this week as SCAT II has had most of the attention! I focused on correcting the area around the upper turret and some minor issues around the 111.

So we went from this:

To masking...

To this.

Much better!

Next weekend it'll be clearcoat time.

Happy modelling.

Very glad that you continued this. It's looking wonderful.

Cheers Bruce, it nearly went back in the box for good at several points! Hopefully it'll turn out alright and that's not me being modest!!
