Badger's 1/72 UM T-26 Model 1933

Hi All

Just a placeholder for now - still trying to decide what 1/72 armour kit to build out of the stash.

Current leaders (all unstarted):

1) UM T-34/85 with D-5T gun - I have some replacement Dragon wheels (to prevent the kit vinyl tires eating the plastic wheels) and a metal barrel

2) Dragon T-34 Model 1943 - Ebay bargain with a couple of bits missing I need to scratch (stowage boxes from memory) and no decals (plenty in the stash)

3) UM T26 - metal barrels but hideously complicated suspension and tracks

4) Zvezda IS-2 - metal barrel

5) Italeri ISU-122 - metal barrel

Was thinking I'd let BM members vote for what they fancy as I can't decide.

Please reply "1", "2" etc below - I'll make a decision on Monday as it's a bank holiday and I can make a start :clap2:

Kind regards

Ben

Hi all

Thanks for voting - I genuinely can't decide.

Will leave this open until Monday morning then make a decision.

Kind regards

Thanks for the vote.

I would like to have a stab at the T-26.

I have 4 or 5 in the stash but the suspension is putting me off.

If it gets the vote I'll give it a go!

Hi all

Well that was fun :penguin:

And a decision has been reached;

With 4 votes each the joint winners are the T-26 and the ISU-122.

So........................

I'll build both of them!

Thanks for all the votes. I'll put some photos up tomorrow but will hopefully be able to make a start later today.

Don't you just love opening kits you haven't looked in for ages?

Just found a full Part photo etch set in the ISU-122! There goes the quick oob build!

Hi All

This will now be the thread for the T-26 as it's the kit I started first.

Will open a new one for the ISU-122 when I start it.

Boxart and obligatory sprue shots

The "interesting" suspension

Horrible tracks

Managed to get a bit done on this yesterday. The hull was made up of flat plates and was a pain to line up properly. Lots of tape to hold things together and some Tamiya quick setting extra thin (love this stuff!!) sorted that out. Right hand fender is a bit loose at the rear still so needs some attention.

Didn't help that lots of the parts were warped. A couple of the location pins for the suspension are broken off, so that will be fun to fix!

Next job was the turret. This has an etch wrap round which was very stiff and refused to bend properly. In the end I annealed it over a lighter which softened it enough to allow me to curve it around. Not entirely happy with the fit - needs a bit of fettling but will probably prime it first so I can what I'm doing.

At this point I'd had enough so that was all the progress for the session.

To be fair it had me a little stumped but I remembered reading a review of the kit which suggested annealing the etch to soften it.

Worked a treat so definitely recommend it!

The etch is a little wonky at the top in places as I had to file a fraction off it to stop it overlapping the roof. Will try and straighten it next time I have a session on it.

Work and a toddler mean modelling time is mostly limited to weekends and holidays these days but I hope to get some more done soon.

Regards

The aftermarket parts will certainly make a difference.

Thanks Peter.

The tracks are a huge improvement as the original vinyl bands are awful!

I am a massive fan of metal barrels and use them wherever I can as it saves having to clean up mould lines whilst trying to keep the kit barrel round.

The one advantage of modelling in 1/72 is the barrels tend to be quite cheap. This one was £1.20 so hardly breaking the bank.
