Millennium Falcon by DeAgostini 1/32 Studio replica

Recommended Posts

80 editions into the 100 sets I've had to stall my work as DeAgostini wont release the remaining 20 editions ahead of my subscription which is really annoying as I cant really get on and get the paint work and weathering done until the whole hull top and bottom is built.

I am not a Millennium Falcon detail specialist so this is a new learn for me - these are some build shots that show how the frame assembles and how I have started to paint my lower and part top sections ahead of the final assembly and weathering stages. This is the first Falcon build for me so it really is a new experience for me and certainly in a scale that offers no prisoners when it comes to detail.

It carries a high price tag but the quality and sheer size makes its a good spread out purchase overall (IMHO). I had 4 new editions arrive yesterday but I think I will now just wait a few more months before I go any further on this as I now have a Hoth scene up on the benches.

I'm constantly tempted by this but not sure I would be prepared to wait all that time to get all the parts, then there are all the mods to it, particularly upgrading the lighting!

Time, time, time, why do we have so little of it!!

Keep up the great work.

Hi Madmonk - you can now pay a lump fee to DeAgostini for all 100 editions as a single BIG order - they just wont send me the last 20 odd editions as I am in a monthly subscription agreement with them.

Its tempting and well worth it by my reckoning - just don't let your Mrs see your bank statement if you do it!!

My dilemma is that I have a Hasbro Falcon which will probably need a fair bit spending on it to make it look anything like!!

Nice work John.........

..and thanks for sharing Your build with Us!

I've built a partwork in the past (Eaglemoss DB5),and managed to resist the temptation to start it until all the bits had arrived, not easy!

My friend at IPMS Farnborough has kindly leant me his issues 82-100 last night at club night so I can get on with this big beastie (once my Hoth diorama is done)

I believe you! I do all my modelling in the kitchen which means 5-10 mins of set-up and pack-up every time I want to do something, which really precludes me from just stealing 10 mins here and there to get on with things. Enjoy the man cave it looks ace.

This looks awesome. I've always wanted one of the DeAgostini Falcons but could never afford it. I went the poor man's route and got a Hasbro one with the intent to detail it and light her up.

Looking great so far :)

so here's an update from the last 7 days or so - thanks to Kallisti, its coming together good and quick now. I decided last night to complete the whole build, mask off all the lights and windows etc and then start again from scratch with a lighter grey once the completed kit is all primed up.

I did a lighting and electrical test last night - all working. The Paragraphix engine grill is drying and shall be fitted tonight.

Its a real beast now those port and starboard mandibles have been fitted

DSCF6642_zpseqgpiiiv.jpg

ILM (Lorne Peterson) used the term "Kit bashing" for the inclusion of all the extra detailing used on their models - as you can see, DeAgostini have faithfully replicated it 40 odd years later

DSCF6636_zpsd2oqlrgu.jpg

As you can see, this kit demands a lot of space

DSCF6645_zpsli0t4qxs.jpg

engine lighting housing installed

DSCF6646_zpswslyqmib.jpg

I've chosen not to go large on the expense of 3D details add-on upgrades for the gun turrets - they wont be very visible due to the thickness of the clear window parts and light glare, so here's what the kits basic assembly looks like

DSCF6647_zps6gjxdqxt.jpg

DSCF6649_zpsicomm1yf.jpg

DSCF6648_zpsffrmechw.jpg

Micro Clear was used to join the gun turret to the top panel as I was not confident I could avoid misting the clear parts using CA or polystyrene cement - taped down to avoid light seepage later on

DSCF6650_zps5fkmfn5q.jpg

Right now you are probably wondering why I did not go to town on the interior detailing - it's simple. I could have spent near on half the full value of the kit on 3rd part interior parts and as I plan to wall hang my finished model, only the flight deck figures will be seen along with the top gun turret so interior detail has been left to the minimum

Thanks for following - that's 1 - 90 built - 10 more to go plus all the thousands of parts not already installed from previous earlier editions that only get used at the final assembly stages.

  • flight deck / cockpit installed last night
  • Top gun turret fixed to upper hull
  • internal structure fitted and centre gun access chamber fitted plus upper gun turret ladder installed
  • last parts of wiring tested (nearly finished)
  • Upper fuselage secured - this went together perfectly first time which really surprised me given the shear size of the model and the numerous male / female securing points around the circumference of the model

  • 2 weeks later...

some good progress - all 100 editions are now built - just the painting game to go now. I have converted an old stool and attached the TV wall stand that DeAgostini supply so that I have a rotating free standing mechanism to get above, below and a full 360 all-round crack and this beast during the next few weeks of paint and decorating..

ramp tested - all electrics 100% OK

Modified primed flight deck crew - Chewie has had to surrender his left leg as he was too bulky for the space and his seat had to be lowered too (just like the real set modification)

Gimme, this is awesome! You're doing a beautiful job of building it. Looks well engineered too.

Do you happen to know how much the one off payment is for it?

Can't wait to see the final results.

Hi Matt

I think ModelSpace sell it for around £1K but if you are lucky like me, there are plenty of almost complete unstarted sets on the 2nd hand market for sale from disgraced husbands and boyfriends selling off their secret stashes of this kit that have since been discovered by their female Masters of the all empowering Dark Side who have put them under pressure to sell their stash or die - I got lucky having picked up around 70 issues for £350 and then subscribed to the remainder with ModelSpace / DeAgostini

thanks for staying tuned in - here's a few updates from the paint shop over the last few days - that stool I converted has made life very easy for me as I can sit and work on the kit and spin it around and flip it over to nearly any angle.
