ML196 Fairmile B - Landing Craft Control

Recommended Posts

Rob and Phil - Thanks - appreciate the comments.

Went out with some friends on a RIB from Saxon Quay up the Itchen river yesterday.  I was pretty delighted to find this on a pontoon just across the way:)

It's fab to see something in the flesh that you've been building from line drawn plans and black and white photos.....

The original winch is till in place!

We formated with my mates friends who were sea-trialling a vintage US harbour tug, and very pleasant she looked too

Before going onto Cowes and stumbling across HDML 1387 HMS Medusa.  I felt it really was my day - these little ships are my absolute fave amongst Coastal Forces

Complete with a visit from the ice-cream boat.....

We followed her out into the eastern Solent on her return back to Portsmouth.  It was extremely evocative...

There's one of these on the build schedule after ML196 is completed.

Short of a Spitfire flypast (seen one twice low over the Solent) or bumping into MGB 80, it couldn't have been a better day.

(Modelling resumes shortly)

@robgizlu, where are you...running out of :popcorn::drink:?

Guilty as charged - I'd like several other builds to be taken into consideration:sorry:

Sorry for the tardy reply - I've been away.  Courageous, this was meant o be a long term build and foolishly I've started a Nagmachon over on AFV and I STILL have my MGB 40 to finish and then there's HMCS Eyebright ...... (and a 1/350 HMS Anchusa somehow appeared in the post this week) oh you know how it is.  If I mange to get more than 3 hrs modelling a week I'm lucky:mellow:

Terrific build.:yes:

Love the photos of the 'B' & HDML.

Thanks John

I have a 1/72 HDML hull that will get built in the medium to long term.

"Fair cop guv":police:

In my defence Your Honour, I do build as indicated by my signature below but I'm not the best at doing WiPs...as my Buccaneer thread shows. And as my school reports of years gone have said... 'room for improvement'.:whistle:

Courageous - Well nudged - you've shamed me into starting:blush:

I can hardly believe that the last work on this was June 17:o

I can only plead an Airfix Spit and a half built Nagmachon in my defence - woeful really.

I find scratchbuilding slightly taxing - I'm envious of the experts here

Any hows - the next step was to build an anchor winch - I obsessed about finding gears which in reality are barely visible (there's a lesson in life here:lalala:)

I put this together in a single session

Work begins on detailing the bridge

I pondered how to do the bow reinforcement below the water line - I tried lead foil but the curve was so great I had to "pleat" it which didn't work.  I finally tried some Green Duro putty which is overly thick but at least is fairly smooth.  It doesn't sand easily so there's some happy scraping time left

Good to be back on 196

Rob;

Glad to see your back at this build.

Here's something else to try if the putty doesn't work out.  I've used Tamiya masking tape for the hull metal reinforcements, with reasonable success.

Masking Tape applied;

After painting;

Any "pleats" in the masking tape can be smoothed out with a little pressure using a smooth piece of plastic or wood as a swaging tool. The tape stretches a bit so it conforms to the curve of the hull.

There is a down side, though.  Paint doesn't adhere very well to the tape & chips easily.  But, with a little experimenting & care, you can get a relatively good result.

Hi John - I tried it but the curve was too great, I'm a fan of Tamiya tape for planking etc.  In terms of preventing chipping and hardening it up - I "paint" it with Klear/Future which hardens and makes it stick even better.  you've done a nice job there which looks very effective

I applied Coastal Craft Scuttles which brings the hull alive

and then worked on the bridge...

I have found the INCRA tool as suggested by Kev (Longshanks) absolutely invaluable.  They're not cheap but worth every penny.

Whilst this is setting - I used some brass to round off the stern strong points

The forward gun platform was "wedged" to raise it - as it sits on an angle

and finally I've been building some deck hatches which are fiddly little things!

I'll get the prop shafts done next and then start fitting out the deck.

Thanks for looking

Rob
