T-28D (not a PhilAF) 1/48th Monogram

Sirs . .

The above build, the venerable (from 1956 mold) 1/48th(?) Monogram North AmericanT-28 Trojan kit preceeded both my P-51D Mustang and the F-5A Freedom posted here very much early on.... The build (the kit, rather) was test-beds for modeling ideas of technique/process that were outside (my opinion) the norm of model aircraft modeling...Foremost of this was the simulation of the polish metal finish using only ordinary Automotive Chrome Enamel Paint (that one in the rattle can) instead of using the modeling specialist metalizer paint brands( no access to these, then nor now). Second, putting a measure on my humble capacity in scratching building cockpit detail(s) without resorting to the envious (then) Black Box Cockpit detail after-market offering (very much no access to this/similar, then nor now).... and lastly, decaling- creating the graphic of the artwork from photograph  and printing same on ordinary commercial decal paper (intended for printing novelty pictures) rather than specialist model decal paper...

The unusual markings the real T-28 Trojan (an enthusiast owned aircraft-Australia)  wore is summarized from the original caption as being the aircraft was assembled from three different air frames: The nose section from a Royal Thai Air Force T-28 , hence the DRAGON; the tail section from a Philippine Air Force T-28, the presence of the 15th Strike Winge PhilippineAF Badge; and the mid-section from a USAF Trojan, hence the Star and Bars.....

A decaling work in progress shot looking at partial view of the cockpit... The two seats (orignal type) were crafted from liod foil of a Baby Formula Can, the belt from the normal Bond Paper slightly smudge with pencil graphite... Large syringes (medical needles) for the canopy slide/rail...knobs and switches from dried White Glue painted in appropriate colors....

Oh, yes, I kind missed the color of the prototype's rudder... mine is a bit lighter... A case of much enthusiasm to accomplish an "experiment"... When I will put this in order I'll do the same in 1/72 (using the Heller kit) together with a Philippine Air Force AT-28D grey Eagle...

Many thanks, Sirs, for viewing.... Regards to all....

You've done an excellent job of an old kit and it's nice to see something a bit different on here. I'd forgotten about the Trojan.

Thanks kind Sirs for the kind words!

The Monogram T-28 kit came to my awareness when I was in elementary school way back  in '58-59...the years the Philippine Air Force received its Trojan version T-28A; i.e. primarily for training ( the AT-28D in Oct 74 for COIN).. as a schoolboy, I could only then google at it in hobby shop next door my elem.school . . one day, I would get my hands on it..... In 2003/2004, while working for the Ministry of Defence, Sultanate of Oman, I chance upon the model in E-Bay...Long story short, I got the kit and what a wonderful surprise when I got the package and finding the contents: For the price of ONE KIT, the seller sent me 4 sets of un-assembled kit parts of 2 were 100% complete (one is shown above built) while the other two are 85-95% complete; plus the AeroMaster Decal (except the bottom left hand decal) and Profile T-28 Magazine. When I e-mailed the seller inquiring if there had been a mistake to the profusion of the "merchandise" he told me he had no use of the extras so he'd be better include these in purchase. I forgot the seller's name but I CAN'T forget his generosity and kindness:

The bottom most airframe has again became a test-bed (@WideSau75) for FOILING work: testing the use of ordinary/normal kitchen variety aluminum foil (not model specialist one, eg Bare Metal foil brand) and Adhesive/Glue ordinary Clear Matt Varnish (carpentry stuff) following the late Mr. Harry Woodman's advice/recommendation (no need for modeling branded Adhesive/Glue nor the Mona Lisa Gold Leaf Adhesive).... The foil was done earlier the painting for the above build (header photo) and the foil has been stuck since..  When it stuck-dried the "aluminum skin" texture were created with 2000grit wet&dry used dry and ordinary Pencil eraser (per Peter Doll)... this humble experiment concludes ordinay Kitchen Foil and ordinary Carpenter's Clear matt Varnish can do the job....

The original box in which the above was crammed in.,..

Again, many, many thanks, kind Sirs, for your accommodation of this post.... Regards to all...

Hi Farouk!!!

That old box reminded me when for just US$ 2.50 I got the same brand new box as this was my very first Trojan in 1977, this year I went to neighbour Honduras on three months vacation and have the joy to watch in the Capital City of Tegucigalpa nearly everyday the ESCUELA MILITAR DE AVIACION= Military Aviation School fromthe Honduran Air Force flying overhead in formation, fighting tactics, soloing...the sound of this engine became very familiar to me at that time. I built the kit at that time in the box version. Later I dissasembled her as the time took her glue tol to avoid loose any part and think she is in a box where only 1/48 kits are in storage together with a new Monogram T-28D I got from a friend in 1983.

God bless the guy who sent you this package that way, now youcan complete all the rest of kits looking for other modelers spare parts box, maybe you could be so fortunate and have the chance to make an AT-28D in PhAF colours!!!

Thank youvery much for sharing this very nice story with us,

Cheers,
