RMP2
Hopefully someone here knows the answer as I cant find anything in my books or on the net to tell me just when A-10s got AIM-9s. Also, was the Dual Rail Adapter used straight away or were single rail launchers used to begin with? Any help is much appreciated.
Murph
Operationally, they've never carried anything but the DRA. IIRC it was mid to late 80s when they got the AIM-9. Regards, Murph
bentwaters81tfw
If you are doing a Bentwaters bird, the 9s are under the starboard wing. Everyone else used the port wing.
RMP2
Cheers, guys. Going by photos and schemes I thought it might be around mid 80s. Too late for my scheme, but not to worry. 28 minutes ago, bentwaters81tfw said: If you are doing a Bentwaters bird, the 9s are under the starboard wing. Everyone else used the port wing. I remember reading about that, any idea of reasoning behind it?
bentwaters81tfw
Don't know offhand. Perhaps because they could, being the biggest wing in the USAF. I'll try and research it.
RMP2
It is an odd one. In the very early days they had the ALQ pod under the Stb wing, so why go to the trouble? Just to be clear - the AIM-9s came during the Lizard camo times, is that right?
bentwaters81tfw
Yes, with the lizard scheme.

Possibly Apocryphal
The Detail & Scale volume on the A-10 was published in 1986 and has one photo of an A-10 fitted with a dual-rail AIM-9 launcher. It's an aircraft of the 422nd TES, whose role is to evaluate aircraft weapons systems. I couldn't say for sure how long the process takes, but I should think service entry would have been some time in '87 or '88. And it would also seem it was twin launchers right from the beginning. boom175
Mid 80's it was a depot level mod that was installed around the same time we got the formation lighting strips although those two TCTO's were not tied to each other.
