"Nope, everything is just... smaller :)"

Isn't there a law of diminishing returns?

Don't be silly, it just makes things harder!

Nevertheless, the boat is starting to look the part.

Great work Kev. Like Beefy I'm moving up to larger scales, you're building smaller and smaller ships. You will be using 10p coins for a base next

Do you use an Optivisor Kev?

I certainly couldn't without one these days.

You'll get no argument from me .....

So far I've stabbed, drilled and sanded my fingers. I could make something of my fingers if it weren't for the blood.

Can I start with a ten pound note first ?

I can't find the workshop without my glasses

Best optical aid came from Specsavers. Just asked for my reading glasses to beefed up......... x4 magnification. Brilliant!

Any news on your armed trawler?

Wow! That lifeboat is a great bit of crash molding. Really well done. I would not have thought of using a hair dryer.  What sort of plastic? Anything special?

Ah ! You saw the earlier attempts

I use a hot air (paint stripper) gun like

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Black-Decker-KX1650-GB-1750W-Heat/dp/B0058GIATY

make sure you get one that stands on its tail like bottom pic above, saves another pair of hands.

I use standard plastic card which I buy in sheets 26 x 9". In this case 0.35mm thick

Anyone need any further info just ask, happy to help

Haha, that explains it then. That will save me from:

a. The wrath of the leader of the house who objects to the smell and inappropriate use of household appliances

and

b. Testing the smoke alarms and generally attempting to burn down the house.

Right I'm calling the dinghy done and Martian I have only one thing to say Rowlocks NO!!

I'm trying to remember that I'm building in this scale for a reason....

I've been looking for some 1/200 scale figures and I'm not impressed, they seem to mainly standing upright. So I'm playing around with trying to make some :banghead:

The main problem is that at this scale a 6' (1800mm) high man is 3/8" (9mm) high :hypnotised:

I seem to be on the right lines but I'm struggling with finding a suitable filler for bulking out the armature. I've tried Vallejo, Tamiya and repeated coats of acrylic paint. Any suggestions???

Bear in mind the arms / legs are around 1mm thick and easily bent

Thanks for looking in

Kev have you thought of using Gator glue or super glue to build up and thicken the shape of he figures

Just an idea might be a daft one they usually are with me

No such thing as a daft idea .....

I don't have Gator Glue but I believe its like PVA wood glue. Tried super glue tonight, same problem as trying to build up with acrylic it just flows out.

Its almost like I need a stiff glue so it stays where I put itn so I can build up buttocks, head etc

Thanks for the thought

Try chopping up some spare sprue and put it in an old paint jar with lots of liquid glue. This will melt the sprue into a semi liquid plastic.

"Drops" of it can then be pulled out on a cocktail stick and attached to the wires. The surface is annoying and does dry fairly quickly but the bulk can be shaped for quite a while afterwards. Once fully dry it behaves like normal plastic and can be sanded easily.

I've never tried making a figure with this method but have used it for many other things, especially join / seam lines.

The Armed Trawler is (very) slowly making progress. I'll try and post some pics tomorrow.

Here's some pics of the liquid plastic, I happened to have some in a jar.

On a cocktail stick and still manageable:

Nice tip Murdo - I was going to suggest Mr Hobby dissolved putty which I imagine is very similar.

The other alternative is some Green stuff (2 part Putty) applied in very small amounts and then moulded with a paintbrush using Mr Hobby lacquer thinners.

Interesting stuff.

Whilst your command of the language is good, I think the word your looking for is misaligned not maligned! Why do you think they left you behind? :P

Kev

Actually, I was sent here to remind you Earthlings what a saintly and unsullied life should be like. It's really not my fault that the last time my halo was seen it was mistaken for and ankle bracelet.

Kev, there is a form of PVA glue called tacky glue or some such, I had some I used for canopies & gap filling, it was stiff enough not to disappear into cracks etc so maybe worth a go, craft shops the best place to find it.

Steve.

Mr. Surfacer comes in several thickness's and there is also Magic Sculpt, Mr. Dissolved putty appears to have a thinner consistency in the latest jar I bought so that would take a while to build up a wire frame figure. Nice going on the "Mighty Midget" B)
