Kev, you will probably bash me over the head with a mallet for this,  but...............Is that winch the right way around? With the brake wheels at the front?

Okay, hit me with your, er, rythm stick............................

I thought that too at first.

The winch will be for the boom to get the cargo in and out of the hold so it would make sense to be facing that way or the winch man would have difficulty seeing what he was controlling.

Many would say you are quite right to question my sanity Julian

but in this case only they would be mistaken

Like you I questioned it, I can only agree with the Murdo explanation :thumbsup2:

Just because you got the winch the right way round, doesn't mean we can't question your sanity Kev. Really, you do walk into these things! :wicked:

A little taster to whet your appetite on the wheelhouse

Whittled a wheel and steering mechanism this morning. Wheel is 7.5mm diameter

I stand corrected on the placement of the winch Kev, Murdo's explanation clarifies things here. Normally you wouldn't want the brake wheels in the "line of fire" of breaking anchor chains.

The wheel is another work of art, just wondering if you will be scratch building the nice young lady standing next to the winch in the photo :wink:

re the Aber wheel set

Two 5mm wheels from this set formed the basis of the ships wheel.

I am really enjoying your build Kev and as a result on Saturday on my way home from a holiday on the Isle of Arran I visited the Scottish Maritime Museum at Irvine for a "Puffer" fix .

The Clyde Puffer VIC 18 "Spartan" is currently out of water and outside the Linthouse Building. As a result, I only got pictures of the hull but seeing your attention to detail, you might like to see how many rivets are on the hull!

Picture 1 Picture 2 Picture 3 Picture 4 Picture 5 Picture 6 Picture 7 Picture 8 Picture 9 Picture 10

Hope the pictures might be of use to you even though VIC 32 and "Spartan" differ in some details.

Hi Dave,

Glad you're enjoying the build.

The pictures are brilliant, you certainly get a feel for the hard life these lovable old boats have had. As for rivets :hmmm: I don't think so in this scale but I'm already toying with the idea of building again at a larger scale.......

Is there anywhere modellers can get life extension to finish the wish/want list

If there is then I am going to live to about 500 years old at this rate!

The wheel looks fabulous.

Made a home for the steering wheel i.e. the wheelhouse

Compass to steer by, found a neat solution for make the balls. I had some 0.7mm solder cut off 1mm, touched with a torch. Hey presto metal balls. Size can be adjusted by length of solder.

Before you put the roof on the wheelhouse Kev, are you sure you've got the relative positions of the binnacle and wheel correct?

By my reconning, the binnacle should be hard up to the forward bulkhead in the centre, and the wheel should be directly behind it, with room between the aft bulkhead and the wheel for the helmsman to stand and steer, and room in front of the wheel to take bearings using the azimuth ring on the top of the compass.

You've got the wheel hard up against the forward bulkhead and the binnacle directly behind the helmsman, it's neither use nor ornament there if you're trying to steer a compass bearing!

Some useful photo's here of VIC32 with a couple of shots on the bridge, binnacle position is clearly shown, wheel less so, but the relative position of binnacle, wheel and helmsman is shown.
