Tamiya 1/48 German Schwimmwagen Type 166 - my 3rd AFV

Recommended Posts

For my third build I decide to try this one, I found it at yet another Model Shop in Birmingham while Mr S was Tank shopping... Such a fantastic idea and seemingly successful, working in many different areas, over 1400 being built and used:

Now for the obligatory starter photos:

Firstly the box - great box art:

Have decided to paint it grey - having watched Stix painting his last Panzer...

The grossdeutschland scheme isn't that scary, honest.

Not convinced!:nah:

I would be more afraid of doing a convincing all-grey scheme than the camo actually Mrs. Stix, nice subject

Possible challenged accepted... thanks - I thought it looked amazing too!

I have done a little, but I've had other priorities of late. Painting started with Revell’s Tank Grey on various parts including wheel hubs:

Also on the inside of the hull -  just in case it's visible at the end!:

And the seats:

Am hoping I can fit more in over Easter break!

Thanks for your encouragement! I'll take a while no doubt, but hopefully will get there in the end!:D

It wasn't a challenge Mrs. Stix but I will be very happy to watch your rendition of the Panzergrau schwimmwagen materialize, ( of course you have an excellent advisor, albeit one out mowing the lawn until teatime) ;)

Cheers, but it may take a while!!

Nice. Needs a Kubelwagen to make up the pair.

It's on the list, but there's a few things in the stash to try first... but a small diorama is a possibility hum...

I actually got on with a bit of actual bit of construction, having painted first, of course.

I worked on the wheel fronts - hubs painted and dry-brushed - tires painted with Revell's Anthracite

Then the wheel backs - hubs painted, dry-brushed and glued in place:

I then finally sorted the front axle and steering parts and then glued them in place:

Hopefully I'll get on and do more over the Easter Break, I've got some embroidery to do as well, plus house and gardening...

Isn't life a PITA the way it keeps getting in the way of modelling!!!

That said, it's coming along nicely.

Nice work.

Interesting approach to start assembly while parts are still on the sprues...

Matt

Didn't want to lose bits! also easier to handle on the sprue if you're as 'cack-handed' as I am!

  • 2 weeks later...

I did a little dry brushing:

I then had a bit of a 'test fit' of the upper and lower hull parts painted -

Some of the parts painted on the sprues:

I finally got around to fitting the seat unit in place:
