Operation Tungsten, a Hobbycraft Corsair

Recommended Posts

Hello dears,

Here we go for the second sailor's bird as I promised .

I started this one far back in the '90, can't remenber, divorced and moved twice since that time.

Whatever, it was  the FG-1 Corsair from Hobbycraft, well almost since....

I put a MDC kit for FAA corsair at least, part of it

           A Verlinden Pratt P-2800

A mixed batch of parts from Verlinden, Aires and Renaissance resin kits.

Fleet Air Arm radio from MDC

           Renaissance wheels and elevator.

Let's see,

The fuel tank came from MDC too.

I had modified the engine cowling, the panels, the undercarriage and so, and so..

To make her looking more like a Corsair.

I cut the wing tip after a plan from AM

Can't remember what has been modified, corrected, re-modified.

Since I got sometimes connection problems, I post this, then I follow on.

Because wasting your work is not amusing at all<_<

So, here is the story behind that kit,

It was back in 1994, we had a commemoration in a town, A policeman, a friend of mine asked for some model WW II related for that occasion.

As I was involved in an IPMS chapter, I arrange  the whole thing. The prez of our club show a Fw-190 from the Eismeer geschwader.

An old man came up, look at the Focke Wulf with attention and... start to cry.

I cared about him and asked if I can do something to help, He just said, "Boy, I actually flown this Aircraft" adding "Can I buy it ?"

The owner of the kit refused to sell it, If mine, I surely would have find a deal or sort of... But our president was not a fine lad at all, as I experimented it month later.

I had a very fine conversation with the old man, as a POW, he decided to stay in Belgium after his term as a forced laborer.

But back in 1944, he was a pilot in the Luftwaffe, flying Focke Wulf in Norway. Around April, he was asked to make a test flight in a Wurger after an overhaul.

Did'nt check guns or ammo, everything was quiet, weather was good a real pleasure flight in fact.

So he decided to paid a visit on the fjord side, since from above it was pretty scenic.

The day was not the best at all:lol:

As he was heading for the fjord, he noticed a flight of Stuka far away, then the idea was following her way...

Wondering, what the hell are these Stuka doing here ??

So he have a more attentive look... since some of the Stuka seem to came on for him:huh:

Then as he said himself  " these Stuka has no Wheels and they seem to be fast"

Very fast in fact, far too fast for a Stuka at all.

He was alone, in a FW-190 maybe unarmed, he did his best... He fled back to his base.

First encounter from the few ones of the Luftwaffe with my favourite Aircraft.:P

I told the old man that his Stuka were in fact british Corsairs, and that he has been clever in gettin' away.

Let's have some family snapshots ??

Hi Bro, did you have experienced a wing circumcision???:P

Following with some comparison, and less of not so funny gag:o

And now Fleet Air Arm family album,

I know, the RJ's baby is from MTO, but just for the fun of it.

The same difference in between a Corvette and a Triumph TR5

Both are fleet fighter but the Corsair is born as such.

Ok Gents, hope that you enjoy my Corsair as I enjoy her !

Paints were once again Xtracrylics, I really like since it's really glossy, I put the decals on it I work with oïl paints and turpenthine.

Next one will be heavy, not navy related at all and will be on RFI in a month, depending on the time I'll have.

See you later and thanks for your comments.

Sincerely.

Hello Dears,

The old german pilot, stayed in Belgium as i said it above.

He worked as a mechanic and owned a little garage, later he became a Ford dealer.

Never told of his background, my friend the policeman just know that he has been a german soldier, no more...

I really like that kind of man, whatever the side they fought the war, Something has to be done for their country and they just did it.

I will never judge such a man and when you're lucky enough and clever enough to listen to what they had to say.

To me that's a pure happiness:pray:.

Thank for the kind words.

Sincerely.

Very nice collection indeed.

I hope the old guy managed to get a replica of his aircraft.

Pete

Hello Pete,

I don't know, little bit later, I go to his garage but he has ceased his activities and get retired.

I search for him, since in between I did bought an Hasegawa Fw-190, would have build her for him.

When I finally found his home, he has passed away. So I don't know, I was sad.

Sincerely.

Lovely Corsairs (and Seafire)! I love the look of the Corsair with the flaps down.

Hello Cookenbacher,

Lot of surgery, since Hobbycraft flaps are wrong and no detailled at all.

The next Hobbycraft Corsair is on her way, and about surgery... For her, it will be an old californian rock star:lol:.

Except that botox is replaced by putty, but the amount of it will be equivalent. At least:idea:

Sincerely.

Hi there,

Nice clean models there. Do you know the English idiom "making a silk purse from a sow's ear"? It describes the work you have done on an old kit to make it look so good.

I like the stories too. If the Wurger model had been mine, i would have given it to the old guy for nothing and considered it a good deal. I made a Beaufighter for a veteran once and though I never met him (I worked with his daughter) I still get a good feeling when I think of it.

Hello Don,

I totally agree, would that Fw be mine, I would have been glad to offer it.

I already did it too for a friend of mine, less fun for me since he did serve on a self-propelled Howitzer:o.

But the pleasure is the same on the 2 end of the deal..

Hope that my next silk purse will look even better than this one.

Thank for the kind words.

Sincerely.

Hello Dears,

I did bought another Corsair today, already smuggled.

Will make a Marines one :P:worry: I will never amend myself and stop buying kits.

And I'll make my first SMW this year,:tmi:

Mrs CC know that I won't make it back empty handed:smirk:

Sincerely.

PS, I already found a little not so local retailer who still have a Tamiya Birdcage...

And an Academy low back Mk XIV:selfie:
