Dermo245
Hi everyone and looking forward to this GB! Such a great idea to celebrate the winners, record-setters, weird and wonderful. I was going to try the forward swept-wing Grumman X-29 but in the end settled for this one, Boeing's losing entry in the Joint Strike Fighter competition, the X-32. (Or Jetty Mac JetFace as I might call her ) Will be built OOB. Good luck with your builds! Pin
I'm so glad this design had lost to XF-35!
AdrianMF
I'm looking forward to it. In this and the YF-22/23 competition, the more interesting-looking entries both lost out. Regards, Adrian

John_W
Always looks like a Disney character to me. Happiest plane in the air...
stevej60
Look forward to this Dermo,I always wondered why Boeing never pitched a simplified version of this aircraft to nations without the budget's for the winning contender probably would of interested the Likes of India and some middle eastern countries.

Regards, Adrian Agree - but on the other hand when you take a look on the Succhoi T-50 it seems the YF-23 somehow did make it ;-) Good to see this build. I have the same kit in stash and always hesitated to start it for reasons I have long forgotten. Will follow with interest. René
TonyTiger66
This is a great subject Dermot. I didn't know a kit existed for it. Thanks for entering it for the GB. I love your name for it ! Looking forward to seeing what this looks like in 3D. Best regards TonyT

Dermo245
Thanks! Was it Sydney Camm who commented that all modern aircraft had four dimensions: span, length, height and politics ?!

Dermo245
So a quick update on this one. The two fuselage halves... And dry-fit together to show the size of this relative to something else I built... And WIP on the cockpit...just belts to be added but otherwise OOB. Cheers, Dermot
Dermo245
So got the fuselage all assembled and after a couple of rounds of filling and sanding with some primer in there too, we're ready for paint later tonight! Enjoy your Easter weekend. Dermot
IanHx
Got one of those on the shelf... If ever an aircraft needed to wear a paper bag over it's head in public, this one is it !!
Dermo245
So this one stalled for a little bit - I used the wrong grey and she languished on the shelf of doom. I seriously thought about binning it but decided to strip the paint. Here she is repainted in the right shade with a coat of Klear.Much happier now! I went for the open weapons bay option for some interest! Not many decals with the kit, just the Boeing logos, serials, some stencils and the JSF competition logo. I added some spare stencils just to spruce it up. The kit comes with Stars-n-bars decals but I couldn't find any photos of the real aircraft with them so left them off. Before a Flory Models wash And after. Some of the panel lines didn't take the wash (probably a result of the paint strip and repaint) so used a pencil to reinstate those. The bay doors kinda hide all the detail in there - typical! And sitting on the gear. I'm happy I stuck with this one. Thanks for looking and enjoy your modelling! Dermo245
So canopy and data probes added, a coat of W&N Flat Varnish and she's done! A radical design approach that was definitely eye-catching if not the most pleasant to look at. From what I've read, it met all the targets set in the competition but was beaten in the end by the X-35 which has now become the F-35. In fairness to Boeing, their final design would have looked a lot different to this demonstrator, with a more conventional wing and Pelikan tail. What might have been I guess.... Will post some more pics in the Gallery. And posed with an Italeri Sea Harrier for a laugh. Thanks for looking and happy modelling. TonyTiger66
I keep running out of 'likes' Dermot, but I like! Next to the Harrier it really does look very 'Toy Story' ! The thing is, I suspect that this is how the P-40 looked in its day too. Had it gone into production like that, a shark mouth would have looked very cool. Well done on the stripping; what did you use? I have to strip models a lot. I use oven cleaner for enamels and a ModelMaster product for acrylics. Neither do the job perfectly. Drawing in the panel lines works, the airframe was very smooth so it looks right. Thanks for sharing this and great to have one going in the gallery Best regards TonyT
greggles.w
Well done! Many comments have been made on the look of this thing, and here's mine for what it's worth: it looks like a bullfrog about to belch!! Perfect subject for this group build. Nice result.
Colin W
Looks like a great piece of modelling if not the prittiest subject. Who said.'If it looks right then it probably is right '? I reckon they could have saved Boeing a few million on this project. Colin

The F-35 isn't an attractive aeroplane but it's a beauty compared with this thing. Very nice looking model of a not very nice looking aeroplane!
