Jaffajake
Hi all. I've just got my hands on Hannants Acrylic gloss varnish but I'm having problems spraying it. I'm diluting it 15% as per the instructions on the bottle and I'm spraying at about 30psi because it's still quite thick. The resultant finish is rough and dries satin. It also gums up the nozzle of the airbrush. Should I dilute it more and spray at 15-20psi? What am I doing wrong? Cheers. Jake
franky boy
Jake It probably needs to be a bit thinner. TBH I haven't sprayed Xtracrylix thinned in this way for years because I just couldn't get on with it but I normally thin my acrylic paints 50/50. Keep a cotton bud dipped in thinner handy to unblock the nozzle as and when. Experiment and and let us know how you get on. fewr9fkr9595
I found that the Xtracrylics varnishes spray best for me when thnned with water. Thin them enough to get a 'wet' coat and reduce air pressure to avoid tip dry and a rough finish 👍🏿
Jaffajake
I've cracked it. I had actually been spraying at 20psi but dialled it down to 15 and thinned it with about 25% thinners. Goes on a dream (until it gums up and clogs the airbrush; I have a feeling it's PVA glue) and dries to a rock hard shine. Thanks for the pointers!
fewr9fkr9595
Glad you're sorted jaffa! edit: I love the xtracrylix satin and matt varnishes for my final coats btw. I dont bother with the gloss tho, use aquagloss for my decals & washes 👍🏿
