Help - Mirage 5BA info

Piero

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I'm looking for information on the Belgian Mirage 5BA during the 80's.

In the specific what kind of weapon load could carry, in addition to the two huge 1700L fuel tanks.

I found some pics of Mirage 5BA with LAU rocket pod under the external wing pylons, but nothing else.

During the Desert Storm some of the 5BA were deployed in Turkey carrying 2 AIM-9J Sidewinder.

I saw a picture of a Mirage 5BA in a museum surrounded by different bomb loads like Snakeye bombs, BL755 cluster …

Also I'm looking for some good photos of the Mirage 5BA nose, especially the lower part.

Thanks in advance.

in french, but at least something!

"Nos armements réels consistaient en des bombes Mk 82 Snakeye et BL 755 Cluster, sans compter nos deux canons de 30 mm. "

our real armarment consisted if Mk-82 Snakeeye and Bl755 clsuter bombs, and the 2 30 mm cannons

Hi

I could not agree with you more, Tempestfan, and my first tought when I had read Piero's post was to direct him to this publication. However, while in this Lock On there is plenty of images of practicaly every individual rivet of Mirages 5BA, there is hardly a word (or a photo) of aircraft's armament. What a pity! Cheers

There's /was a Verlinden Lock On on the 5BA (ca. 1988), but from what I've seen on Abe, lock on's are worth their weight in gold.

good point!

as I have it , I just quickly went though it :(

not much more than we already have here...

more fuel tank options,500l, 1300l and interestingly the Israeli jettisonable 500l finned wingtanks as well!,

center line pylon....

Hello,

many thanks for your kindly answer!

The Lock On Mirage 5 volume is on my work table as a bibble!

But the picturs and the links you provide me are great reference too!!!

At this point I think I'll go for a 5BA with a training AIM-9 round hanging under the wing pylon.

Maybe a couple of Mk.82 Snakeye drills in tandem under the centrline pylon?...

back in my days in florennes and as far as my sqn (2 sqn) was concerned.

Daily configuration was 2 1700 lts/ israeli supersonic tanks and CES-3 (pylon adapters), nothing on the centerline.

AG practise or campaign: drop tanks, centerline pylon (PM-3) loaded with  one tortue (small bombs carrier) and oinertne lièvre (localy designed small bombs carrier) loaded with 2 BDU-33 and 2 MK-106

under the wings, outer station: one lau-32 (7 shots rockets launcher) with one RX per pod.

AAM: drop tanks and one AIM-9 J or P can't remenber anymore.

Taceval: 2x1700 Ltrs drop tanks and one PM-3 loaded with 2 MK-82 snakeye or 2 parachute retarded matra bombs ou 2 Mk-117(I think, the fins were from WWII vintage)   or 2 BL-755. and the two rocket launchers.

Take note however that the aircraft were loaded and then unloaded, they never flew fully armed.,

Sometimes 1 practise MK-82 inert snakeye, I also loaded french manifactured napalm bombs (once or twice only)

The loading configurations were different in our sister sqn (42 sqn) and in Bierset.

Hope that helps,

Beppe

Hi Piero,

mirage  sqns were mainly mud movers,

AIM-9 were seldom loaded except during DACT campaign in Corsica, and only one per aircraft, there wasn't enough winder, and we used to swap them all the time.

As far as inert MK-82, we, in Florennes loaded only one in the front station of the PM-3 except for static displays.

During Taceval or station readyness exercises, we used to load the real stull, only ammo and ordonance were life ones.

Hope that's help

Hi Beppe,

many thanks, you gave a lot of good information!!!

An inert Mk.82 under the front station of the centreline pylon and an AIM-9P drill under the external pylon of the starboard wing seems a nice load.

Plus two huge 1700lt fuel tanks, of course.

P.S.: ... AIM-9P or AIM-9B?

The pic of the 5BA in the museum show an AIM-9B drill... but the 5BA deployed in Turkey were loaded with AIM-9P.... correct?

Blue, most likely - with a side of rust.  ;)

This is typical:

body was bleue , fin green, retaining band for the fin was silver.

I don't remember any band on the nose, but it's now nearly 30 years, and the memory is fading.

I think they were P or J heads, actually we  had to lend them from others sqn

MK 117 (? Beppe , you confirm?)

On all these B/W pictures the color is olive drab except the rockets (blue) and BL755 I think a bright green (not sure) or blue
