John R
There is a fairing around the tail at the base of the fin. It has been suggested that the leading edge of this fairing was not faired in, as if the fairing was placed over the rear fuselage skin. Can anybody please clarify this? Also, is there some form of radiused fillet where the fin meets the fuselage, or is it a sharp right angle? Finn
I replied to your other post but this pic shows the fairing had been removed: Jari
Finn
Here is a video of the first flight of the XF-104: some scenes show the fairing on while others, namely the first flight, don't. Jari
Patrick Martin
Could this be only on the J65 powered early aircraft - before the switch to the J79? The first two had the J65 and only switched to the J79 with the YF-104 .... PM
John R
Wow! Thank you very much. I did not know that video existed. Do you know I had seen that first picture and never noticed what went on around the tail because at the time I was concentrating on the intakes. Drrr! Patrick - I'm sure it was only fitted to the J65 a/c and seeing that it was not here for the first flight makes me think that it was a 'bolted on fix' to smooth out the airflow around the nozzle. Giorgio N
This picture seems to suggest that the fairing leading edge was indeed over the fuselage skin http://www.i-f-s.nl/wp-content/uploads/2013/07/53-7786_taxy.jpg
John R
Funny how one thing leads to another. When I viewed the video I saw that there were others and one had a shots of the tail from which I snipped these It did not have the fairing for the first flight
