Bandai's new TIE/SK x1 Air Superiority Fighter, or Striker for short, from the Star Wars Story 'Rogue One'. I wasn't sure about the design when it was first revealed, but it's grown on me since seeing the film, and more so while building it. A great kit, easily up to the usual Bandai standards, and quite large for a TIE, coming in at over 9" long (about twice the length of a TIE Interceptor). The one criticism I can lay at it, and it's not the fault of Bandai, is that it's a swine to photograph as the wings always seem to be in the way, hence the majority of the shots being from below.

As usual a fantastic build and great finish.

But have you noticed that, considering it's a fighter, the visibility for the pilot (and TIE fighters are the same), is appalling, with no rearward vision at all?

Yep, another great build Andy. Am sure this one was just a walk in the park for you. Love the last shot. View from above is rarely seen on this ship.

Another one to add to my list of Star Wars ships. I really hope they release a U-Wing in this scale next.

Can you tell me what colors you used to paint it?

The main colour on the fuselage is a mix of Tamiya ocean grey and white. The solar panels are black with a light over-spray of Vallejo steel.

Another masterclass in building and finishing delivering another masterpiece.

Off topic: I've seen lots of pictures and artworks of the different variants of Tie Fighter, Interceptor and Striker in flight however does anyone have any idea how they would be handled on the ground: there's no obvious location for undercarriage in their fuselages so, presumably, they would have to land and be handled on a cradle type structure or, in a galaxy far far away, had the Empire perfected magic floating technology ?

In the Rebels animation, they're often shown on the ground with a boarding ladder to access the cockpit

Or there's the launch rack from The Force Awakens

The Strikers probably have some kind of landing gear, since the wings are top mounted

Andy. Do you mind taking a pic of your camera setup( including lighting setup) so I can see how you seem to get outstanding photos of your beautiful models?

This is what it looked like a couple of years ago. I use a low table instead of the cardboard box now, but the lights are the same

The lightheads each hold five daylight CFL bulbs. They're a bit big and bulky really. Smaller lights would be more practical, as you could get them closer to the model.

I have the lights pointing in at 45 degrees from each side, and slightly above the model, angled down, as in the diagrams below

The camera is a Canon EOS650 with either a Sigma 17-70mm or a Canon 100mm Macro

Quoted from BrotherMole in the wip thread, regarding the detail painting

"It's so precise it looks sprayed - how do you not get that warmer grey paint on the main hull as you paint in the detail bits? Mad skills Andy - thanks for sharing your skills and knowledge - its really helpful."

Thanks mate. The detail painting isn't hard, but I wouldn't be able to do it without an Optivisor (or Optivisor-like device; I'm to cheap to buy the real thing). You don't need to worry about getting the details that precise, as the washes and enamel shading tend to hide any rougher edges.

As you'll see in the close-ups below, there's nothing that fancy going on, and plenty of scruffy areas where I've not cleaned the wash up properly

Thanks for the insight Andy, it's details like these that not many modellers would be open to showing.

I must admit I've also got an optivisor and almost always use it. Partially because of failing old eyes (well I'm not that old, but probably need glasses soon). But the added magnification really helps zoom in on those details. That and a fine brush as my best friends :-) My Optivisor was from eBay or Amazon from China for like €15 or so. Best thing I ever purchased !

P.S I personally like The Force Awakens Tie "Pez Despenser".  In Battelfront they also hang from the ceiling I believe.

I appreciate the time you took to write this down for me. I also wonder for many other setups that I have seen, folks have been using 3-light setup. But you use two and it seems you always get fantastic results. Thank you for this. BTW, I too agree about the optivisor. Best investment. My eyes are not what they used to be either.

Ah Andy - only you could show us your 'scruffy' painting and serve up a bunch of photos of awesome painting!

I'm only jesting though - I really do appreciate it as it shows what can be done. Cheers.

adds optivisior to my to buy list...
