1/72nd MPM Blenheim Mk.V, BA539, ZP-C of 15 Sqn SAAF based in N. Africa.

Recommended Posts

Hiya Folks,

I`ve always liked the Blenheim Mk.V and this 1/72nd MPM kit was built for the MTO GB, wearing the markings of 15 Sqn SAAF which used the type on anti shipping sorties from North Africa. It wears the Temperate Sea Scheme with white undersides which was also worn by Baltimore`s and Ventura`s carrying out the same role,....... the TSS was extended down the sides of the fuselage as the better known `coastal' scheme was disliked by crews operating over the Med as it made them stick out like sore thumbs from above against the blue sea and thus more vulnerable to fighters.

As usual the model was mostly brush painted, with rattle can white applied to the undersides and Polly Scale Extra Dark Sea Grey and Dark Slate Grey representing a slightly faded looking TSS. Humbrol enamel Gun Metal was used for the exhaust rings and other Humbrol enamels used for detail painting.

A massive thanks to my mate Colin Burgess who sent me the excellent book `The Aegean Pirates' which is the wartime history of 15 Sqn as this provided most of the reference pics for this model.

And here is one that I built a while back in desert colours,......I`m hoping to do another in SEAC markings!

Hello,Tony - Hoping this reply finds you in improving health and spirit. You're educating me again with these two fine builds in your customary style.I'm not overly familiar with the Blenheim's variants but appreciate the appeal and interest in the type.

Superb modelling as always,my friend.

😉👍 All the very best,Paul.

A great looking pair of Blenheim Vs.  Not sure I've ever seen one on here before.  A great tribute to those gallant anti-shipping crews.  I met Sir Ivor Broom once some years ago.   He flew Blenheims in that role from Malta and was quickly promoted from Flight Sergeant to Squadron Leader because the attrition rate was so high.  I also read a comment from a Spitfire or Hurricane pilot who escorted a Blenheim anti-shipping strike and described witnessing it as 'horrible'.

A terrific two-fer, ToT! Have you ever built a bad model, yet? I haven't worked up the courage to do one Blenheim, much less a pair! Great builds!

Mike

A shame that Airfix didn't get the nacelles as accurate on their new-tools as MPM did.

Great build and I love the fact that you base your builds on solid historical data. That's the spirit, as far as I am concerned.

I can't say the same about the Mk.V , as I never liked its look, "thanks" to a sturgeon-like nasal appendix... It must be an acquired taste!

Congratulations!

Thanks everybody, your kind comments are very much appreciated,

Jean- I see what you mean about the Sturgeon like nose,..... like you say it must be an acquired taste, I`ve always gone for the weird and wonderful!

Cheers

Hi Tony, magic finish to your build that dorsal turret really 'sits up'.It can't have done much for the aerodynamics  of what was already a slow looking aircraft!!! I was happy to let yo have th ebook, Stefan and his co awthor did a magnificent job and although the copy I gave you was an editors copy with lots of typos, I'm sure you were pleased to have it in your collection.

More power to your elbow mate...

Hi Tony, cracking models, As a fellow hairy stick user I have always admired your work and been envious of the finish you get, do you use acrylics or enamels?
