bristol boy
The new museum at Filton, the home of the Bristol Aircraft Company are repatriating a Freighter from NZ shortly, which in my world is great news. To celebrate I have taken my Superfreighter from the stashlet and decided to make it as a Mark 31 using the Magna resin conversion kit. So without further ado.....the boxes. A little surgery... Now here's where I need some help, what goes on behind the pilots seat in that big hole? The answer is not freight.. there are I think some racks with equipment on and possibly another seat? I have looked at previous builds, searched the internet, bought the Freighter book etc. but cannot find a nice clear guide. Any one know?

CedB
Great subject BB - following with interest There's some cockpit shots here and lots of images (including a small cutaway) here. A walkaround of G-BISU here. She's actually looking quite sad at the moment, recent image here and here. Details of the repatriation project here for this who haven't seen it. You might have a look for the 1957 film starring Jack Hawkins The Man in the Sky (released in the U.S. as Decision Against Time). It appears on late TV sometimes and is available on DVD. Much of the movie takes place aboard G-AIFV on loan from Silver City posing as a new experimental transport. Hawkins plays a test pilot struggling to bring the prototype back safely after an engine fire and there is much cockpit and cabin footage. My question is this - how much of it is studio set and how much real interior? If it isn't the real thing, Ealing went to a lot of trouble. . .

I wanted the Airmodel conversion but couldn't get one, perhaps a good thing as I would have been tempted to have the doors open which would men loads of internal detailing. I've seen some stills from the film but wonder if it is a Mark 21 interior? Mine is generic Freighter! A little update.. I now have a cockpit, enough detail I think for the limited view in and probably not entirely accurate. When pushed into the fuselage not so much is visible. This is my current thoughts on colour scheme, it has to be something that I can produce decals for, I think from some trials I can trace the Bristol logo using AutoCAD and colour the background. Don't suppose anyone knows if the British United lettering is a known font? More soon....

RJP
Civil Aviation Authority lists G-AIFV as a Mk 21. Certainly the interior shots used were a freight carrier, not a Wayfarer.

Admiral Puff
If you don't already have it, lash out and get yourself the Air-Britain monograph on the Frightener - well worth the asking price. I did an article for a recent APMA Journal - pm me if you'd like a copy.

Thanks AP, I have a copy, it s a great source of info but completely lacking in cockpit photos apart from 2 line drawings and nothing looking backwards. My interior is now done, looking forward to closing the fuselage. Found a photo of my intended victim, anyone know why it is slightly different to the profile?
AdrianMF
Nice upgrade in the cockpit. Love the "Bristol" swoosh on the tail in the picture. Looking forward to more! Regards, Adrian
TonyTiger66
I have just caught up with this BB. Great subject and it looks like the Magna conversion is a nice fit. Very nice cockpit work. I remember (maybe) the original box art had cars driving out of the aircraft. I loved kits like the Airfix hovercraft that included little cars. I wondered if this one does? Great choice of colour scheme. All best regards TonyT

bristol boy
Bit of an update. Flight deck given a bit of paintwork, some references seem to suggest everything was black but I've gone for grey with black equipment. When it is inserted most of it disappears! The fuselage hales are now stuck together allowing the nose and tail to be glued on, multiple applications of filler now needed, incidentally the instrument panel doesn't fit into the nose because of the thickness of the resin! The magna nose is also a different radius on the bottom corners to the Airfix fuselage, more sanding. CedB
Good stuff BB - those internals look good (even if they won't be seen again, you'll know they're there) and you seem to be making light work of the mods, even though I guess it was far from easy. Also excited about the Freighter coming home and the opening of the new museum. Can't wait.
