Plumbum
My old Revell kit came in the mail today. I am doing it up as Showtime 100. I changed my mind, from Aardvarks, as I was suppose to do Cunningham's plane 7 years ago and finally got all the info I need for the proper weapons load on it's final flight. I will need to get aftermarket decals and 4 rockeyes.---John f4j 1 by jvandeu53, on Flickr OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA by jvandeu53, on Flickr
jean
Hi John, this is great news! A US Navy Phantom is not something we see everyday on BM. And VF-114 has got a pretty sexy paint job to look at. If I am not mistaken, this is the old Monogram kit, and that in itself is good news, as the old Monograms were often of great quality. Will be following and have fun! JR
Plumbum
I started out with the kit alterations first. This is the un-fun part, cutting off the fuel tanks from the outer wing pylons. That's what I never liked about Monogram, molding tanks and weapons to pylons without giving you options for different loads. Anyways I have them cut off and the pylons glued together. Now to sand where I cut and blend the bottoms in.---John f4j 3 by jvandeu53, on Flickr OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA by jvandeu53, on Flickr
Plumbum
The weapons load from my last 7 years of surfing the web seems to be---2 Aim 7 missiles in the rear fuselage wells, empty forward fuselage wells, outer wing pylons on but empty, 2 inner wing pylons with 2 Aim 9 missiles on launchers above a TER with 2 Rockeyes side by side on the TER with the bottom station of the TER empty. The center line fuel tank will be used. So all in all it will be 2 Sparrows, 4 Sidewinders, 4 Rockeyes, empty outer wing pylons and a center line fuel tank.---John

John, You need to add to the bottom of those outboard pylons since the tank pylons (integral to the tanks in USAF models - the kit uses them for both both USAF and USN)) were not the same as the weapons pylons. USN pylon could be used for tanks or for weapons - with an adapter. http://tailspintopics.blogspot.com/2016/01/f-4-phantom-outboard-pylon-and-mer.html http://www.arcforums.com/forums/air/index.php?/topic/284679-172-f-4-phantom-outer-pylons/ Gene K
Plumbum
Not sure where your coming from as I have researched the pylons extensively. They only had that filler when they were used with weapons. They have the contour of the tanks with the tanks off UNLESS they add the adapter to use a MER or TER. I am NOT using weapons on the outer wing pylons. Thanks---John
Plumbum
My kit pylon looks suspiciously like this one, off an F-4J, minus the tank.Hmmmmmmm.---John yf-4j_151497_027_of_194 by jvandeu53, on Flickr

Plumbum
The cockpit is in and fuselage assembled. I wasn't sure of having to add weight so I loaded up the nose with clay anyways. Seems as though I remember the Phantoms needing little or no nose weight.---John OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA by jvandeu53, on Flickr
Plumbum
Almost caught up to it's British cousin the F-4K. I still need to order paints, now for both. It needs some light sanding then intakes. I added the canopy to protect the ejection seats. Should have left seats out till last, oh well.---John f4j 9 by jvandeu53, on Flickr
Plumbum
The intakes are painted inside and on. The left intake fit almost perfect, will need very little filling or sanding. I wasn't so lucky with the right intake. The fuselage-wing bottom seems to be warped and twisted causing a large gap in the intake bottom. I will wait for the glue to set then put some super glue in the gap and clamp it to close the gap.---John OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA by jvandeu53, on Flickr f4j 11 by jvandeu53, on Flickr
Plumbum
The intake is super glued and sanded up, I also have the flaps on and edges painted red, and glued the speed brakes in the closed position. All I need to do is add the pylons and mask for painting.---John f4j 12 by jvandeu53, on Flickr
Plumbum
The outer wing pylons and center line tank have been added.I can now mask and paint.---John OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA by jvandeu53, on Flickr

Duncan B
You might want to sand off that raised detail on the centreline tank depending on time frame of the airframe you are making, unlike the underwing Fletchers the centreline tanks didn't have an external stiffener/joint. (edit: turns out the early ones, 1960's pre F-4J, did have that feature, I stand corrected) The pylons for the Sargent Fletchers were integral to the tanks, the outer wing pylons for weapons (i.e. without Fletcher tanks) were not the same as Gene said. The early McDD manufactured drop tanks had a joint either side of the tank and the pylons were separate items however the Fletcher items only had one seam on the lower left side IIRC. Plumbum
Thanks, I thought that seam was a bit odd.---John
Plumbum
Just a bit curious, you said the early outer wing tanks and center line tank had the stiffener and the later center line tanks didn't have the stiffener? Am I right on that? Why I ask is I am doing an F-4C, Monogram, and it has the same tanks as the F-4J kit. Am I right in assuming the early Air Force tanks were different than the ones Monogram originally molded? I believe the tanks I want for my 1965 F-4C at Ubon were smaller tanks than the Monogram ones? Thanks---John
