rob85
So it turns out my new (moved jobs to Hereford) hobby store do a great deal! if you by decalfix you get a free model.... that's my story and I am sticking to it!.... their decal fix is expensive, just over £10 anyway I ended up with this Untitled by robert mulvey, on Flickr I am going through a bit of a radial faze at the moment which may need to be addressing at some point in the year, also I never really built US aircraft however since the the MTO GB and completing 'Bottoms Up II' i have become quite keen on US aircraft and their lovely nose art options! I have always loved this one for childish reasons of course, so when I saw it there in the store while I was trying to find something to take me above £5 for a card transaction I thought it must be a sign.... bought it and wanted to start it straight away! Its a nice kit from 1999, my only real complaint looking at the sprue is there is more flash than there really should be and the cowl flaps are not the nicest... and it would have been nice to have a closed option. Here she is in her naked state Untitled by robert mulvey, on Flickr Untitled by robert mulvey, on Flickr Untitled by robert mulvey, on Flickr Untitled by robert mulvey, on Flickr so today I have started with painting the cockpit, it had its base coat detail painting followed by a dry brushing of Sand, and aluminium along with chipping, once all this dried out it got a citadel wash. Untitled by robert mulvey, on Flickr Untitled by robert mulvey, on Flickr Untitled by robert mulvey, on Flickr seat belts are moulded on and hand painted by ones self using a tiny brush of course next was the rather nice engine, this had a coat of mr hobby metal one once dry a good buffing with a big stiff brush Untitled by robert mulvey, on Flickr Untitled by robert mulvey, on Flickr the gear housing(?) was buffed then the dome section painted grey. Untitled by robert mulvey, on Flickr the gear bays were done next and given a base coat of olive green with my own mix of zinc cromate over the top Untitled by robert mulvey, on Flickr Untitled by robert mulvey, on Flickr after that it was back to the cockpit, assembled and then glued into the fuselage Untitled by robert mulvey, on Flickr Untitled by robert mulvey, on Flickr then she got closed up Untitled by robert mulvey, on Flickr Untitled by robert mulvey, on Flickr Untitled by robert mulvey, on Flickr seams will need more work but i will leave them for now. Wings were then added Untitled by robert mulvey, on Flickr Untitled by robert mulvey, on Flickr Untitled by robert mulvey, on Flickr the wing root will get a sand and clean up and i will need to take the flash off the gun barrels next the engine was assembled Untitled by robert mulvey, on Flickr Untitled by robert mulvey, on Flickr the prob shaft is way too long and will need some work when the prop is fitted. after that the cowling was tidied and then added, now if you are building this kit you may find like me that the fit of the cowl round the engine was rather tight and needed a fair bit of force to fit... or at least i hope you do because I did! and here where we are at, now i have to get the kids from school! Untitled by robert mulvey, on Flickr not bad for a few hours work I think! comments welcome Rob Edited February 8, 2017 by rob85

This JUG looks big even in 1/72; I have the Academy 1:48 rendition in my stash, and I'm thinking of what a beast of a model would turn out of that Ciao
FalkeEins
..neat work and a neat kit..built it a few times. The beast's 'belly' is a bit fat but easy to live with.

rob85
Cheers bbudde! I have tried something different to try and and improve my brush painted NMF. People talk about using a black primer and gloss to get a better smoother NMF so i have done my own take using HU85 Coal Black. Its a really nice paint and below is two coats thinned with warter i prepped the surface with 3600 micromesh to get rid of blemishes and seams which appears to have worked?! Untitled by robert mulvey, on Flickr Untitled by robert mulvey, on Flickr It looks so badass in black I may just leave it that way! Thoughts? TheBaron
Given the title of this thread I had to look from idle curiosity Rob. You however have been far from idle! Bombing along no less! That looks mighty bad in black, in the best possible way. Theres no special ops scheme that would let you keep it that way is there? Tony there is a black RAF version with red cowl in the Hase double boxing if memory serves..... hmmmmm yes the title may in fact put people off.... not sure it really represents what is actually being built, but i did find it funny! For my own petty purposes (admittedly), I'd actually like to see her in NMF after this shiny gloss black base ... (did I mention I have a 1:48 JUG in my stash that needs an NMF finish? ) Ciao
CedB
Flippin' 'eck Rob, 17 hours in and she's ready for the NMF! Great stuff - that engine looks great and the cockpit weathering very realistic. That black coat has certainly gone on well. Can't wait to see the NMF!

rob85
Cheers chaps! Im currently giving it a good micromesh with some 8000 grit, appears to be making a difference! Weather it will help the silver paint stick is another thing! Rob
rob85
I bet you all thought I had been sat around doing sweet F-A?! well you are.... wrong! So this work has been done over the last few days so not all tonight... I'm not that productive! first up was two coats of citadel's runefang steel Untitled by robert mulvey, on Flickr followed by another coat once dry Untitled by robert mulvey, on Flickr Untitled by robert mulvey, on Flickr Untitled by robert mulvey, on Flickr its gone on ok, but i dont think its as good as my other attempts, time for a new pot i feel. this of course received a good micromesh! and here she is... spot the difference? I can in person Untitled by robert mulvey, on Flickr she then got her anti glare strip, this got a bot of a touch up as the tape bled a little Untitled by robert mulvey, on Flickr then it was on with the masking and painting for the Red, this was done with humbrol enamel. Untitled by robert mulvey, on Flickr after that had been touched up and left over night to dry I started with the panel variation using Ironbreaker by citadel and a wash from their range Untitled by robert mulvey, on Flickr Untitled by robert mulvey, on Flickr Untitled by robert mulvey, on Flickr It looks like the contrast is very stark but I think thats the light as it is not so in the flesh.... canopy was masked and painted (there is supposed to be a t bar that fits in the runners so you can glue the canopy to it and move it back and forth.... its now inside the fuselage.... bugger) again with humbrol enamel red. Untitled by robert mulvey, on Flickr Untitled by robert mulvey, on Flickr she got glossed while this was being done and then left over night.... this is the only pic i have Untitled by robert mulvey, on Flickr I mean if i was a pilot and than that behind me, they wouldn't even need to used the 8 .50 cals i would be so worried I would have jumped happily.... mark up and intimidation kill any way then she got some transfers on tonight..... they were a pain, i will go back to boiling warter i think as the decal fix has not performed for me yet the boiling water worked a treat. Untitled by robert mulvey, on Flickr so after all that i'm off to drink this... Untitled by robert mulvey, on Flickr saw it at the shop and felt rude leaving it on the shelf Cheers all Rob
TheBaron
A handsome piece of quicksilver you've made there Rob. The Sir Keith bevvy looks a nice way to toast your work. Hope you had the white overalls on! Tony
CedB
Great stuff Rob - good job on the variation and weathering, she looks just right to me I must try this hot water technique...
giemme
A well deserved beer, for a very convincing brushed-on NMF may I ask how do you apply hot water on the decals? By brush? Or with a cotton bud or else? TIA Ciao
rob85
Well, I submerge the transfer in boiled water then slide it onto the surface. Once in the correct place to take some excess water away I use a dry brush, just do it doesn't move. I then dip a cotton pad (like what the ladies use on their face) folded into quarters, into the boiled water and apply a lot of pressure. I found folding the pad means it absorbs more of the water away and means I can cover more area and apply more pressure without breaking the model. This is what I did on all other models but used decal fix on these followed by pressure from a damp cotton pad, the transfers are not great and I don't feel it's the best method. The above was stolen from Simon (beard) and I cannot claim any responsibility for this cunning cheers for the comments chaps! Just stealing myself for the next round of transfers and doing a bit of work on the wild cat. Rob

AdrianMF
Nice NMF and panel variations! Looks like you need to approach Revell decals like Academy ones then! I did have to use superglue as a setting agent on a very old Fw190 once... Regards, Adrian

Acadamy decals, ugh, I have a Aleutian tiger on the bench that has very little growl due to them! A shame as I really liked the paint finish cheers for The tip Adrian I may just super glue the poor cats chin in place! Rob
