Belkits 1/24 Escort Mk.1 1970 London-Mexico World Cup Rally, Mikkola/Palm

Recommended Posts

The resin detail set parts have been painted, these are the 'bull bars', 3x fuel filler caps, rear aux. spot lamp, AVO lamp brackets. I've also added the covers to the two upper spot lights which await the CIBIE decals applying. Due to the Bank Holiday the mesh for the stone guard will be delayed thus causing a temporary halt to assembly. Hopefully the replacement rear lights will be cast soon too.

Looking good Mark, very good. I too was away over the weekend enjoying wildlife in the Tankwa Karoo... Roo bar looks the biz as do the lights etc, it's coming together nicely.

Yeah, the mesh arrived today. Boo, bad guess at the mesh size/gauge, it could fill the holes in the Turpitz - back to the drawing board! Anyone advise where i can source some? Here's a photo of what I'm after.

Hi Mark,

I used to buy the stuff from Media Mix in Singapore, haven't used them for a good few years but they always used to be really good when I did;

https://www.mediamixhobby.com.sg/shop/catalogsearch/result/?q=mesh+square

Closer to home I think Little Cars stock mesh but I can't find any listed on the website, Paul is really helpful if you ring him;

edit: Hiroboy is listing a Hobby Design detail kit specifically for the Mk1, may be a bit spendy just for the mesh though;

Thanks for the links Keith, I hope I can find something to suit.

Update - I've had a scan at the Media Mix site and there looks to be several which could be suitable under the ABERS brand, I just need to scale the photo to pin it down to which one. Pity they are in Singapore, I can see a back burner being lit.

Thanks, not sure where the mesh on this is for but it isn't the correct size for the area I have to cover. [I think our edits are crossing] The Media Mix stuff is £6.58 for 80 x 45mm, but that's without shipping, I may end up getting a few sizes for the spares box.

edit - Sorted, ordered some Aber Mesh in 2 sizes from europeland before they build the wall ^_^.

A little more progress... Having finally sourced some fine mesh for the stone guard this has been applied between the resin AVO lamp brackets. The headlamp stone guards have also been added but these require drilling to locate the upper support bars to the Bull Bar. Also on the to do list for the front are the corner mudguards, is it me or do the kit rubbery ones not fit[?], for which I'll use some foil [good old red wine:D] fortunately these will hide the gaping lines in the valance cut-outs.

Good to see this one back on the go Mark! I dug mine out again a week or so back - took the lid off the box, looked at it & promptly put it away again. Just can't find the mojo anywhere...

As long as you keep looking in the boxes Keith, the mojo will grab you again.

I'm working on another Ford related project currently which means my time on the Escort and Panigale has been limited, but waiting for bits to arrive doesn't help either.

Looking good.

One tiny observation if I may - the front indicator/sidelights are a slightly different shape on the original as I believe they used Hillman Imp units, no idea why when the Ford ones did the same job....

Feel free to ignore :sorry:

Bonhoff - Good spot re the indicator/side lights. I had noticed the angle on the photos but just stuck the kit lights on, doh [must get my eyesight retested!]. If I can prise them off I will sand an angle to the ends and take the opportunity to repaint.

I found the front side/indicator lights which are now painted and attached. The side windows are in too and are being left overnight to set - I'm hoping they stay in when I fit the body to the chassis/interior tub. :worry:

An initial batch of the rear lamp clear castings has arrived and they've had 1 coat of Tamiya tint. Front spots have been decalled and the mounting rod attached as can be seen from the attached image. Not too far to go with the other small items to fit, I just need more time at the present.

The lights are now on, yeah! A bit of black tape added to the lower front spots to look like the straps/clips. I even managed to add the chrome ring to the rear reflectors - another useful application for the Molotow markers.

Nice. I see they changed the rear lights too.

I can't understand why they went to the trouble, blanking in the holes for the rectangular stock items then fitting those individual lights proud of the bodywork. If AVO had done this mod to all the Mk.1 rally cars that would have made a bit more sense, but for one event?!

It is odd, as you say.

The front side lights would have had to be rewired too.

The originals were in the headlight bowls and I don't think

the cable was long enough to reach down to the indicators.

Although it is a very long time since I played with a Mk 1 escort!

That's coming on a treat, Mark!

As for the Hobby Design 'detail-up set' that Keith refers to above, it doesn't address the incorrect rad grill and persists with supplying different lengths of wiper arm - Doh!!

Who are you using to host your images?

I've pulled the plug on Photobucket; closed my account with a bit of a snotty message . . .

Re the Hobby design set it does appear a bit pricy especially as you comment on the incorrect parts. There could well be a new supplier of PE Mesh sheets in varying sizes and patterns appearing soon ;). Awaiting a parcel from Shapeways today including the 3D printed alternative Escort rear lights to the ones I had clear cast. Also more parts for the Transit LWB chassis to enable me to set the rear axle/suspension components to get the ride height just so.

I use Dropshots they have both free hosting and 'Premium' paid for service, the former has worked well for me. I hope you haven't lost any images with Photobucket.
