Phil Lewis Posted January 23, 2017 Share Posted January 23, 2017 Wanting to do something simple and purely OOB for a change, concentrating on paint and weather effects I dug this out of my stash. For the size the detail looks quite nice on the sprues Standard old-school Revell instructions I know the rails etc. are overscale but having attempted, and failed, to produce something more in scale with fine brass tube I decided it was beyond my feeble soldering skills to produce anything tidy. I would not be buying any after market items for it, not when I have it's bigger 1/144th scale buddy in the stash On to the build. Steps 1 and 2 were perfectly simple and before I knew it I arrived here.. I have to say that the fit on this was really good, only the tiniest smears of filler needed here and there throughout the entire build, nice one Revell I have to say that I got the bit between the teeth and ended up here in very quick time Closeup of the screws, rear planes and rudder assembly, yes I know aftermarket would be finer but I think it's perfectly adequate for the scale and keeping in the spirit of a nice, quick, easy build for relaxation after the Luchs. Last bits in place and we are now ready to paint. I look forward to seeing it complete, what a lovely, relaxing side project it makes me want to do another one. I have particularly fond memories of building one as a mascot for my Volvo estate which had been nicknamed 'The U-boat' which was taken on a European tour of 18 countries with my mates when I was younger. (The highlight of which was visiting U-995 in Laboe) It stayed on the dashboard the whole time and even went with it to car heaven. (I forgot to take it out). Phil Lewis Posted January 25, 2017 Author Share Posted January 25, 2017 Let the fun begin! I don't have any revell paints so the colours were always going to be a matter of interpretation. As they are going to be weathered I think even really accurate mixes would end up faded out of all rcognition so I went with thinned XF-63 German Grey for the lower hull and main deck, a custom mix (by eye) of approximately 50/50 XF-66 Light Grey and XF-2 Flat white for the conning tower and a custom mix of (approx) 30/70 XF-20 Medium Grey/ XF-2 Flat white for the very light grey on the upper hull sides and periscopes. Also used a very light dust of this latter mix to create the initial tonal variation on the main hull. It's darker in reality, the camera overexposed it somewhat. Masked up ready for the lighter North Atlantic light grey. Light Grey mix applied again trying to get slightly worn vertical streaking effect Masked up the sides ready to refresh the deck colour Deck sprayed trying to get a slightly patchy effect. Masking removed and some details already picked out in various shades of the main colours. Next time I shall pick out the finer details, apply decals and seal under a matt clear coat ready for weathering washes and pigments. Phil Lewis Posted January 26, 2017 Author Share Posted January 26, 2017 (edited) A bit of weather going on As there are a grand total of 4 decals to go on the sub and 3 for the stand I decided to spot apply thinned Xtracrylix gloss varnish in the relevant locations and applied the decals for U-552. Also painted some of the fine details and tidied up where necessary. Applied a nice coat of Mr Hobby Super Clear Matt and let it dry. Made up a very thin wash mix of XF-1 and Vallejo Model Air Light Rust and lightly applied in all the recessed detail. I also found it simulated light rust streaks very well. Looking at it I realised I was in danger of overdoing the weathering so I'm going to stop whilst I'm still happy with the effect. Just need to add the rigging from fine EZ Line and should be done Ok just checked the Fine EZ Line and at this scale it's much too thick so I shall call it done here. Thanks for looking in. Thanks Andy With the washes I usually add a bit of vallejo flow improver which seems to keep things moving along nicely I actually prefer to use the Flory clay washes where possible and was going to use them on this build but realised that at this scale it was going to end up as too much. Glad you like it, I wanted to do something quick and easy and out of the box. The bits have arrived from Badger so I shall be resuming the Tiger build.
