Boreham Mk.1 Escorts which 'White'???

Here's a subject that could end up turning into a heated debate? But in no way as heated as counting rivets!

I've  come across conflicting info re the white the Boreham Escort Mk.1's were painted. I have read articles stating cars were painted Diamond White & Ermine White. Also some other forums have similar threads banging on about 50 shades of white, but that's another whole issue. The 'Works Escorts in Detail' book is unhelpfully elusive on this subject, unless I've skipped mention of it.

Has anyone DEFINITIVE info on which is correct?

Edit: To partly answer my own question, I've found this list which shows both Whites but surely Boreham wouldn't have used two different shades for the Rally cars?

Here is the definitive list for Mk 1s:

Ermine white
Diamond white
Maize yellow
Daytona Yellow
Le Mans Green (also referred to as Lime Green)
Modena Green
Sunset Red
Electric Blue (also called Monza Blue)
Tawney Brown Metallic
Copper Brown Metallic
Sebring Red
Olympic Blue
Stardust Silver
Black
Vista Orange

But you could also order your own colour, which some people did, resulting in non-standard, but production line produced cars such as:

Marine Blue
Purple Velvet Metallic
Saphire Blue Metallic

It depends on what you are modelling.

As far as I'm aware Twin Cams were painted Ermine White with Diamond White being used on the RS1600's.

I base that on Graham Robson stating in his Works Escort book, not the Works Escort in Detail book. That all the first 25 Production Twin Cams were painted white. They were built in late 1967, and correct me if I'm wrong but of those 2 whites, only Ermine was a factory colour at that time.

The introduction year if Diamond white could hold the key with when it was introduced onto the Boreham Escorts but if you chose Ermine for Twin Can, Diamond for RS, you wouldn't be far off in my opinion.

Brilliant info. Thanks for the quick reply Ashley.

The car in question is FTW 48H 1.85 Ltr 'Mexico Special' An article from Bonhams auctions has it as Ermine white and given it was registered on 01 Oct 1969 should be correct. Although the car was not a Boreham built car it should still be the Ermine finish of the first batch as you indicate.

We restored a Mk1 Escort a few years back into a semi replica of the 1968 Circuit of Ireland car and used Ermine White.

I liked the shade so much that I repainted my Skoda rally car the same colour.

How did a Mexico get registered in Oct 69? The model wasn't introduced until after the 1970 London - Mexico rally?!

Keith

Edit - I just realised it was one of the works rally cars on the event. D'oh!

Edit2 - just been looking at the 'Factory Original Sporting Mk1 Escorts' book & that confirms the original production Mex's were Ermine.

Keith,

Thanks for confirming the colour.

On reading about the Escorts it appears the same cars popped up in many guises, often being converted or retro fitted with upgrades etc., and then going through different owners.
