Plumbum
I just received my 1/48 Revell F-14A in the mail. I am doing it as an older model, block 80, plane. So to accurize it a bit I am removing the ECM lump off the beaver tail and will purchase the Steel Beach 7 vent gun grill. I am also not using any weapons, so I will remove the Sidewinder missiles from the shoulder pylons and putty and sand them up. So far I have the beaver tail ECM cut off and sanded and one sidewinder removed.---John Tomcat 1 by jvandeu53, on Flickr Tomcat 2 by jvandeu53, on Flickr OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA by jvandeu53, on Flickr Tomcat 3 by jvandeu53, on Flickr
Plumbum
The missiles are removed and the pylons assembled and puttied. I also have the cockpit interior primed with dark gull gray.---John Tomcat 5 by jvandeu53, on Flickr

I'm part way through building the F-14B version of this kit (it includes an extra sprue with LANTIRN pod, a selection of bombs and new shoulder pylons but the new pylons are quite poorly moulded and much too thick), my original plan was to remove the Sparrows from the original kit parts and in fact I did the port one, and was going to fit the LANTIRN pod on the new starboard pylon, but they're such a mismatch I've now bitten the bullet and ordered a set of Steel Beach replacement pylons. I'll be following your build with interest.

Plumbum
My goof, I cut off Sparrow NOT Sidewinder. I type faster than I think. Here's some cockpit detail painting. Seats next.---John Tomcat 6 by jvandeu53, on Flickr

Plumbum
I just installed the cockpit in the upper fuselage.---John OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA by jvandeu53, on Flickr
Plumbum
I started work on the lower fuselage. The intakes interiors are painted white and the turbine faces installed. The lower half of the intakes were painted inside as well and then assembled to the lower fuselage. I just puttied up some of the seams in preparation for sanding.---John Tomcat 10 by jvandeu53, on Flickr
Plumbum
I have the wings installed and the fuselage assembled. After it sets up I will see what needs to be puttied and sanded. I still have to order the Steel Beach gun panel.---John Tomcat 12 by jvandeu53, on Flickr
Plumbum
I started filling and sanding. It's going to be a long process. I am thinking of ordering a replacement nose from Steel Beach along with the gun panel.---John Tomcat 13 by jvandeu53, on Flickr
bbudde
I'm in here. Love those old Monogram kits. They were truly state of art in the 70-80's. Well shaped, superdetailed and rather simple to build. Cheers
Giorgio N
Good to see the Monogram kit built ! I'm particularly fond of both this kit and the aircraft included in the decal sheet as a picture of AE-212 was one of the main responsible for my Tomcat addiction when I was 8... Looking forward to the rest of your build. This kit really is tough to put together, it's really going to be a long process to fill and sand everything. Plumbum
I have the nasty gouge filled and sanded. Now I can move on to the nose wheel bay and burner cans.---John OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA by jvandeu53, on Flickr
Plumbum
I opted to put the tails on. The kit nose is pathetic.I built a Monogram 20 plus years ago and don't remember it being so out of shape. Definitely will order the Steel Beach nose. This kit is a newer repop, I guess the molds are getting tired.---John Tomcat 16 by jvandeu53, on Flickr Tomcat 17 by jvandeu53, on Flickr
