SAAB S17BL cameras

I just pulled out my Marivox 1/72 SAAB 17 kit, and started trying to research the S17BL recce version, which is what I want to build (Naturally). The instructions are very vague, and AFAIK there is almost NO info on the internet or in print on that variant. Does anybody know where the camera(s) and camera window(s) were located?

The instructions were very vague as to which color scheme was used on the S17BL variant.

A WIP thread on this kit would be awesome, if I could just find one.

I wasn't sure if i should've posted this here in WW2  or in the Cold War subforum, since the plane was used in both time periods.

Hello, Larry

I bought the same kit back in 1999 and, yes, instructions are vague to say the least. According to a following web page (http://www.avrosys.nu/aircraft/Spaning/212S17.htm) recce planes had two panels on the lower sides of observer's post replaced by transparencies and camera hatches had been provided on each side of the fuselage. I take these hatches are represented on the kit as two rectangular panels bordering lower part of national insignia. I have no idea, though, whether these were sliding panels or were removed and replaced by N2 cameras on the ground prior to a flight. There is plenty of drawings and some photos of S17 in Björn Karlström Flygplansritningar 4 - Svenska Flygvapnets spaningsflygplan 1928-86 book. Unfortunately, the book provides no conclusive information about the exact location of the camera. Not much, but I hope it helps. Cheers

For the B 17BL you use the B-engine and the same colours as the B 17A i.e. the same colours as the still existing aircraft. The B 17BL was based at F 3 Wing so they should med marked with a black (before 1944) or yellow "3" (after 1944). The black/yellow Wing numbers in the kit are too narrow, and there are no number 3's.

The large individual numbers where white before 1944, and yellow after 1944.

Her is a picture of the camera installation.

There were three hatches. One for vertical shoots and one on either side for oblique shoots. You see all three in the picture.

Mind you that this has nothing to do with the observers two windows that are shown on most drawings and pictures.

Thanks Jure, for the link to that page. Good info there. I have a PDF copy of the book you mentioned, along with most of the others in that series.

Thanks Matave, for the VERY informative reply. I will have to try to source the proper "S" decals. I may try to find an aftermarket engine, if one exists. Maybe Vector?

The picture of the camera installation was really cool. I will try to look at link's home page, to see if there are other good photos that might interest me.

Hi Larry,

I don't have a answer for you, but send a question to IPMS Stockholm forum. http://www.ipmsstockholm.se/home/

You can leave question in English there. I quite sure that you will get answer.

Br. Vesa

Thanks Vesa, I will try on that forum. I will most likely have more questions, as the build progresses, like interior colors. But I have a few other kits ahead of the SAAB 17, in the QUEUE.
