Antb
Hi guys, When I joined the forum I introduced myself as a 1/48 scale modeller, however having some Christmas money to spend on a recent trip to my LMS i was drawn in by a shiny box and I knew it would be my next build despite having a 1/24 Typhoon to go at! So here we go, my first proper WIP (I did build a P-51d in the group build but never posted in the main section of the forum) will be the new tool 1/72 Airfix B-17g. I built a B-17 as a kid but this one will be quite a bit better than that one, hopefully. To add a disclaimer, I'm not a scratch builder, having never done it I wouldn't know where to start, so this kit will be completely OOB warts and all, assuming there are some, so please bear that in mind and be patient with me When I get around to it I will be adding an Eduard mask set as there's no way I am cutting tape to some of the sizes required, it's just mental. Enough waffle heres the box shot: A shot of the sprues and lastly the bird I shall be building, going for the 1945 version Wish me luck, always grateful for any hints and tips along the way. Progress to follow in a few days hopefully, wanted to get the thread started. Cheers Ant Edited January 12, 2017 by Antb

Josip
But please invest in some aftermarket guns. Those in the box are just plain awfull!
Antb
Thanks guys I can feel the pressure already 6 minutes ago, Josip said: But please invest in some aftermarket guns. Stew Dapple
Don't change the guns if you are happy with them, I haven't seen them but if they look okay to you they will be okay. I'll sit in too, if you don't mind, I've been tempted by this kit - several times now - myself Cheers, Stew
Beard
I too built the 'old' Airfix B17 and quite fancy the new one but I'm waiting for the 100 Group one to be released before I flash the cash. Do do you mind if I tag along?

Antb
Hi @Stew Dapple here's some pics of the guns I've just taken. Thought you might like to see them. And another of some further along the sprue i have had a look at the aftermarket guns and I'm not sure.
HP42
Nice one, I think at that scale I'd stick with the kit ones, they look very good to me and much better than the kits of old.
Stew Dapple
Thanks Ant, they don't look bad to me; I've just seen the price of the Eduard replacement set and frankly... no, the kit guns don't look bad enough to justify that expense to me. As I said though, as long as you think they are good enough, they are good enough. Cheers, Stew

Thanks mate, they're tiny aren't they! Forgot just how small 1/72 is, I'm sure it was huge when I was a kid.... 20 minutes ago, Stew Dapple said: Thanks Ant, they don't look bad to me; I've just seen the price of the Eduard replacement set and frankly... no, the kit guns don't look bad enough to justify that expense to me. Thom216
Not a big /72 fan myself, but I'll be watching because the B-17 is my favorite bomber. Good luck!
Josip
Well, it's like this: if you're modeling just for fun and you're not concerned about accuracy just leave them . But on the other hand the B-17 is a big impressive thing; a Flying Fortress and what's a fort without guns, right? Those in the box are very basic and overscale and on an assembled model they look unconvincing and huge as 20mm cannon with random perforations. Try QuickBoost for replacement barrels. Check my fort on this forum if you like. Josip

Accuracy for me me isn't really that important I just enjoy the build and producing something I am pleased with. I shall have a look at your build. Thanks again

Antb
Good evening, (afternoon or good morning depending where you are in the world) managed to get started last night and have some progress to share. Before I post my pictures, how small is 1/72, aaaarrrrgh! I'm so glad I haven't invested in PE for this build Anyway, managed to get the cockpit sorted, the bombs and bomb bay is next up. There are three ejector marks on the front of the pit, needed a spot of filler and a bit of sanding so wasn't too bad overall. I'm enjoying the build so far despite the size of everything. Im as yet undecided whether to have the bird flying or with wheels down. If flying I'd have to get a mustang to escort it..... As always, grateful for any hints, tips, advice or criticism ha ha cheers guys Edited January 14, 2017 by Antb
tomprobert
Looking good so far. I too have this kit in the stash and have been looking forward to another build thread to pick up some tips. Just one thing if I may - from the pictures it looks as if you've used US Interior Green for the seats. This was never used, at any time, during B-17 production and instead Bronze Green was the colour. This was only found on the exposed metal areas of the cockpit, with the remainder of the interior being natural aluminium from nose to tail. I actually struggled with the colour of the green a little. The Humbrol paint chart shows a really deep dark green but some research on B-17's on the internet showed varying colours of green, so I just went with the shade Which I thought was middle of the road which for me is Vallejo Russian uniform green. Im no expert and don't profess to be so just took a punt really. Guess it didn't come in, but never mind. As for the other colours, the black and the brown, I was just following the instructions provided in the kit so no idea whether they are accurate or not. I will be doing the fuselage insides aluminium though, which is shown in the instructions for the kit. Actually, most of the steps from here on in are mainly aluminium so that seems like we're on the right path. Thank you for your comments and feedback though, it is appreciated and I shall try and get the rest of the build as right as I can however I am following the airfix instructions so who knows what might happen. Thanks again.
Stew Dapple
Good start Ant; there was a fairly detailed discussion on B-17 interiors here. I think the consensus was that the Airfix colour call-outs were largely correct for a contemporary B-17 but not necessarily a preserved modern one. Haha, you can't keep a track on everything that goes on here It's up to you about the repainting but you'll never paint round those transfers on the seat backs; I doubt you'll see much of the interior once the fuselage is closed up anyway. Cheers, Stew
