The other Tim's 1/72 Tamiya F16CJ - OOB 52FW Spangdahlem

Ufortunately there appears to be no 380FS specific decals, with a red fin stripe, touting 'Warhawks'.....so the only solution is a plain red stripe, as seen on some airframes. To that end I have masked off the area and sprayed white primer over the black, with a veiw of getting some red on there before the main spray job starts.

I hate filling and sanding seams....never seem to get rid of em (pardon the pun!)

Not sure if I will have time to build the Revell kit during this GB...Its a Block 30H, not sure if visibly much different to the Block 50/52? The decals provided for the iger meet are of an airframe that was based at Spang with the 380TFS....in the old 3 tone camo. May look for something more adventurous decal wise....

after a kefuffle getting the red stripe on I have got the Mr Metal Stainless base coat on.....

Next up the lighter undersides and front a mix of Mr Metal Stainless and FS36270 Mr Color 306....I found that 50/50 just went very dark so maybe 75/25 Grey/Stainless.

Not the best pic, apologies. What better use for an Academy MiG 23 upper fuselage part (reminds me need to crack on with my 70's builds!)  than as a paint mule for the Haveglass 1 effect! Its meant to show the light grey at the left and darker at the right side, (including a blob of neat paint!) with the approx mix indicating what is what...

I know the pic is poo - but any comments? 50/50 not too dark?

A long photo heavy post, but with an explanation!

So I got started, 50/50 with the light grey - compare tank to still steel jet:

with the lighter grey on I masked:

50/50 the darker grey....just seemed to steel and not enough dark grey?

DCAB5FB0-4EB6-47E7-9874-2693A489AEE1_zps

wasn't happy with the shape of the dark grey....and the nose did seem too pale....D077A2BB-19E9-4E9F-B61A-C499708E4240_zps

I ummed and arrred and wasnt happy....back out to the garage!!

So I went 60/40 Dark grey/steel, then darkened after the main spray to try to capture 'dark/dirty' areas, add a touch of black to the nose colour and resprayed.....

Attempt at tonals for the tail...

Think I will need a bit more....Tamiya smoke? Or a highly thinned tar black? I will gloss, decal and gloss to seal first, as the markings are covered in dirt in places....

I hate seems....colours seem to work though, Haveglass attempt and normal grey for the tank as above...

Now looking a bit more Gunship grey, with tonals and the 'metallic' effect still visible...nose a better colour in my view...

309D3CA0-E78C-45F0-AD15-973BAD3F6C92_zps

a better shape with the curve

FBACDFEA-C282-4B4D-B901-ED22DEB52AED_zps

better idea of the 'dirt' build up....

More needed on the stbd tail...again Tamiya smoke?

Tail test fitted (will push down when glued with no gap)....

Getting there I hope!

A coat of gloss and decal time......

Not sure if I should matt, maybe satin?

Good progress there tim.

As regards to the final coat - matt or satin?

I went matt first on my have glass but it killed off the sheen and sparkle so I went back over with satin 👍🏿

A quick one - Just be carefull with your glossing coats, try and keep them light as it looks like you've had quite alot of paint build up, the mr metals can be quite coarse/gritty and have larger flakes - panel lines may get too shallow to take a wash?

Good advice - thanks. There is a bit more paint on than usual, black primer, Stainless base coat and a couple more coats with as you say thicker Mr Metal paint.

Have kept the gloss coat light, lets hope the decals settle!

that colour scheme has keep you quite busy and by the sound of it it's not as simple to do as it might appear.

As Tony mentioned you now need to be quite careful with the thickness of your coats now. With the final clear coat I'd go with the Flat clear and give it plenty of time to cure, then lightly buff the surface to knock back the finish to give you a bit of a patchy finish. Shiny in some spots and dirty and flat in others.

You've done a great job with her so far, keep it up.
