The other Tim's 1/72 Tamiya F16CJ - OOB 52FW Spangdahlem

Tim Moff

Recommended Posts

Im in with this reboxing of the much hyped Tamiya 1/72 F16CJ - come complete with full weapons, so will be built OOB. This kinda fits in with my ongoing USAFE project.

Did toy with doing a Have Glass V version, but Spangs airframes are still sporting the standard 2 grey paint job.

Have a Mustang to finish by Sunday and am off to Uganda for a couple of weeks, so it may be started after then.

welcome aboard Tim and a nice model you've brought along. Gee these look so much like their 1/48th big brothers.

It'll be good to see what you have planned, good luck on your trip.

Good luck with the build and look forward to seeing her in the gallery.

Just ordered some Astra Decals for a Spang model - will try to deconflict airframes with Alex.

Uganda shouldn't be too high risk - doing some live shows from Kampala etc. Bit of winter sun hopefully!

Hallo Tim,

remember your childhood USAFE 80s builds from the 80s NATO vs WARPAC GB!Funnily enough, am also doing my own pet 80s USAFE project - my other entry to this GB will be the 512th TFS F-16C squadron commander's a/c - the one with the dragon on the tail. Will look forward to your project here!

Cheers, Paul

Back from Uganda, bit of TOIL so started both projects.

Decals arrived - look nice,  2 sets are supplied to assist with colour matching, I also got the older set.

This allows any Spang F16 to be built, so will see what other builders are going to model and try to do an alternative.

Will help with references.

Taken some parts off the sprues in preparation for priming, test fitting etc:

Looks a nice little kit.

Nice start Tim, I used that exact decal sheet a few years back (Built one of the Spang jets borrowed by Lockheed for the Paris Airshow) and was very impressed with them. Typical DACO/ASTRA stuff, super accurate!

Nice one, I do the same kit right now (but without the weapons) btw, I will make the same aircraft I have linked in my WIP (91-0343). Just wondering, can you post a close up of the fuselage and HARM-Pylons? I have to get mine from the Hasegawa-Kit, and I fear they have some minor shape issues.

Hi Alex

Thanks, I feel that the Hasegawa is not fully correct, as the Harm laucher is positionned too far forward (pics will follow tomorrow). The launcher rail is slightly ahead of the pointy bit of the pylon, whereas on all the pictures, it should be slightly behind. Ah, me stupid, I meant the fuselage PYLON, as the Hasegawa one looks too long too, and has to be shortened a bit.

Most items of the sprue, sub assemblies getting built....thinking about a GBU-31 for one side and an AGM 88 (in the kit the other). Anyone know of any 1/72 kits that contain a GBU-31? Loathe buying them individually when a kit containing them s not much more expensive!

Drop us a PM with your details Tim - I'll send you a GBU-31 plus the decals for it.

Cheers,

Dermot

Got the grey and white primer out.

The Snipe pod is made up of 2 clear parts, have tried using Micro Mask for the first time, before I prime the pod.

  • 2 weeks later...

Busy couple of weeks, got some basics done, hopefully some more construction will take place soon! Bit of dry brushing on the coal black using Mr Metal Stainless and a stiff brush.

Get the pit washed with some floreys dark dirt and built. Have hot the exhaust done. More pics soon hopefully.

The question is what aircraft to build. I was kindly donated a GBU31 by Dermot, my plan to build the Wing King during Op Odyssy Dawn.

Problem is during the Op it wore the Red and Yellow tail flash - this version is not included in either of the Astra/Daco decal sets of the kit set.....Alex is building 91-0343, so will avoid that....I may build as per the kits decals post Odyssy Dawn, using the specific Tamiya decals with the Daco set.

F-16CM_91-0352.jpg

They were based at KAF for Op Enduring Freedom, Apr-Dec 13.....

Or I may look at Inherent Resolve .....Spangs aircraft were involved, based out of Incirlik in Turkey, returning to Germany in Oct last year.

However as D'aesh do not have Radars, the HARM would need replacing with some GBUs or a Maverick for the other wing, which I have somewhere.

Thing the Shaw F16C has a Mav on the port wing? Anyone confirm?

Anyone get the serial of this SP F16 (weathering looks like it could be fun!) Again Inherent Resolve, looks like a Mav on the Port wing? Again any expert help?

Pete, I think he meant the other wing. Assymetric load. You can just barely see the "eye" of the Maverick behind the fuselage.

Yes - recognise the GBUs on the Stbd wing, port does look like a Maverick seeker head
