WWII British Bomber wheel cover colour

Does anyone know what colour the 'tarpaulin' wheel covers used on aircraft on hardstandings were?  In particular those for Halifaxes and Lancasters.  I have seen postwar covers in a metallic grey but can't recall ever seeing a period colour photo of any.
