weathering

Hi, Happy New Year to you.   I would like advice on weathering my airfix models.   I want to weather my 1 72 spitfire,  i think i'm going to use a clay wash because i can wash the model all over let it dry and then rub it off but im going to leave areas so the model looks dirty, what do you think?     I was given a tank kit, i bought Humbrol dark earth and Humbrol rust weathering powders,  how do i weather the tank with these powders please?
