trickyrich
thanks all for all the nice comments! You don't know how frustrating it is to be away with work at the moment, was really in the groove with the build last week, oh well just a couple of days to go before I can get back to her. I only have the elevators (stabilators??) left to do in the Tiger pattern, then the radome and intake lip. I may end up repainting the intake, will see how I go. I must admit I haven't looked to see what other masks are available, but I may have to have a wee look as these were fantastic! The nice thing is these vinyl masks is they didn't suffer from "shrinkage" (I know that's a problem for some!! ) and they were pretty accurate when compared to photos of the actual beast. I'll definitely look at this brand again for my next painting adventure! I plan to have her "parked" as if on display so I have some "Remove before Flight" tags to go on her on the way along with a ladder, plus I've made some covers for the AOA probes. I'll make a cover for the pitot probe was well, plus any other covers I need to have. Plus i have a couple of other things in mind for her as well! trickyrich
Well I haven’t been so great at keeping this up to date, will blame the stinking hot weather we’re having at the moment! Ok then , I finished off painting the last bits, the elevators and cockpit. I wished I had done them all at the same time as there is for some reason a very slight variation in colour, it’s only noticeable in certain lights. It’s quite strange as I did everything exactly the same! While I was at it I painted the radome and intake lip as well, once it was all dry a coat of clear. Also waiting for me when I got home was this… I plan to have the cockpit open so this should do nicely…a bit better than the PE ones available! So with these bits done and the panel wash done as well, she starting to look the part!! Unfortunately the decals with both F-16’s do not include the markings for the no walk areas that are black, so I have to paint these. So more masking, plus there are a couple of lines on the elevators and at the rear of the fuselage which need to be added as well! Looks a lot better now and surprisingly they are even even!! Ok with that all done it’s finally time to add the decals…..and I managed twice to get the national marking around the wrong way! Plus the weapons were finished as well. Depending on the photos of her weapons she carried varied greatly along with the pylons she was fitted with. She has even bee photographed with conformal tanks and “Sniper ATP” pod. So I’m not going to get too concerned with what she has or hasn’t had fitted, these are pretty much what I've seen in a couple of photos. So how does she look…… …. Am very close to having her finished, but will hold back a bit as I still have a few plans for her. By the end of this break she’ll be 98% finished but I’m still waiting for the last few bits to arrive for her. Plus for those who may be interested, her Kiwi sister!
Dermo245
Lovely duo Rich and can't decide which I prefer, the Polish or the Kiwi... The Kiwi....wait, hang on...the Polish one......no, the Kiwi......but maybe the Pol......
Erik Leijdens
Looking great Rich! I'm impressed with both of your F-16's. The Polish one has a very nice finish. And the Kiwi one looks like a CAS A-16. Great job on both Rich. Erik
mirageiv
Great work Rich on both of them, amazing finishes. It always amazes me how a simple, light weight day fighter turned into (albeit yours is a whiff) a monster of a ground attack aircraft like your Kiwi jet. trickyrich
Not a lot to show for this update, was distracted by medicals for my forthcoming trip and just forgot to take photos. But this will be the last update before she’s completed. I had to do some more masking and painting this time the ATA refueling markings. The ones in the original model are mid-grey where they need to be black, so short of buying a set of decals just for this I had to paint them. And it actually come out quite well, it toned down a bit when the model was given her final flat clear coat. The tail pipe of course didn’t fit! It seems that a lot of the AM bits for the F-16 are for the Hasegawa model and not the Tamiya one, so everything need to be custom fitted or modified! As well as sanding back the top of the front end of the tail pipe I had to remove half of the fittings Tamiya use for the rudder! Somewhere in the process of the build I managed to loose the new intake cover I made……I know it’ll show up once I’ve finish her! So I decided to make a different one, this time a cover, I used the tin cap from a wine bottle. It doesn’t look much here but it’s since been painted and looks really good. While I was at it I made a cover for the gun sight from the same material. For the rest there are no photos, but she has been given some slight weathering as per a few photos I have of her. The U’C is now completely done…well almost, I still have to put the wheels on. The store are almost done and fitted, just need to decal the drop tanks. I’d say she’s at the 98% finished mark now, there are some other stuff I’ve done or will be doing to her, but that’ll have to wait for the final post.
SoftScience
Supremely fine work, sir. That is the kind of finish that I wish I could master.

trickyrich
Well she’s done, the first build of the year out of the way!!! As usual the last wee bits were the hardest, I am missing one final small piece but unfortunately it didn’t arrive in time so I had to leave it out. I won't bore you with lots of photo's of the last wee bits being done as I forgot to take photos! I’ve represented her here in display form well after the Tiger Meet of 2015, apart form the AIM-9X’s (artistic license here) she’s pretty much how she appears in quite a few photos. She was a lovely model to build and I thoroughly enjoyed the build….now I just need to finish off her Kiwi sister! There are further and different photo's in the Gallery and RFI sections, please enjoy.

mirageiv
Rich that has to be one of the best F-16's I've seen yet, let alone the best special scheme one I have seen! 10/10, because of your model I want to build the exact same one day, really well done, it is flawless. Among everything else, the intake cover with the tiny cords really highlights the detail in this one. David. trickyrich
Thanks guy's for the nice comments, I did really enjoy this build and I wanted to have a go at displaying her a bit different to how I normally display them. As far as the scheme goes, it'll be the first of many Tiger Meet aircraft I plan to build, next up will be a Mirage 2000, in 2010 colours I think! 1 hour ago, mirageiv said: Rich that has to be one of the best F-16's I've seen yet, let alone the best special scheme one I have seen! 10/10, because of your model I want to build the exact same one day, really well done, it is flawless. Those masks are awesome, easily the best i've used and painting is the only way to go with a scheme like this.

Tim Moff
On 1/31/2017 at 6:11 AM, trickyrich said: time for one last and final update before I head back to work tomorrow….I’ve got her painted! I spent ages trying to find out some info on the paint used on these aircraft but I could find anything. Doesn’t appear that anyone else has posted a build using these masks either. Eventually I found a colour I was happy with…..there’s bound to be someone that disagrees! Ammo MiG’s Lt. Compass Ghost Grey, it has just the right amount of blue hue to it. Strangely it to is FS.36375, but as I’ve found the variations in colour from the different manufactures for the same FS number can be frightening! So with that sorted (after a quick trip to the city for paint) time to mask. This process brought back memories of the masking required for the “Splinter” MiG! After about 3 hours we have this! I actually wished I could have just left it like this! The paint was mixed down with my new favourite friend, Mr Color Leveler & Thinner to around 60/40 paint to thinner. I was able to mist over multiple coats and the finish looks to be quite good. As much as I’m dying to rip the masks off the paint will need to dry overnight due to the leveling solution. Sorry about the photo looking so washed out! I did though take the masks off the centre drop tank, that was painted without adding Leveling solution and probably want on a bit thick for my liking. Now looking at the photos I have the Lt Grey looks like a perfect colour match and the Dk. Grey almost looks to dark in some photos! So when I'm back home next it should be smooth sailing to the end! Ok I could help myself, had just a wee peek! Thats really nice....however its giving me Flashbacks to the F5F I did with a similar stripey job....the trauma of masking!!!
trickyrich
I remember that build...that was an awesome paint job!!! You know some people think masking is therapeutical........just wait till I find them!
