Yeovilton 1974 (?)

Recommended Posts

As promised some more of my by gone pics being aired for the benefit of interested members! Unlike my first lot, these have been 'cleaned up' using the new found tool on my laptop.  I have  a feeling doing all these pics will take me away from modelling for a while. Not a bad thing seeing as I have lost the modelling mojo in a big way.   But anyhow, here are some Yeovilton Air Day shots and according to my notes on the slide box are from 1974. (Unless someone is certain it may be another year) If it was 74, then these were taken on my Zenith E with 400mm lens for the flying pics and 135 and 28mm lens for the static to the best of my memory.

Enjoy!

Great photos, thanks for sharing. What happened to the Firefly?

Sadly the Firefly crashed at one of the Duxford shows just a few years ago with tragic results.

Meanwhile many thanks for the comments and date correction.

I vaguely remember this now, very sad indeed.

Thanks again for sharing Paul, I look forward to seeing what you find next!

Think you may have a mix of photos from different years - the 527th AS wasn't formed until 1976, so the Alconbury F-5E definitely didn't appear at Yeovilton in '74!

Correct the Sqn stood up 1st January 1977

Love 70s nostalgia, you cant beat it

My source says 1 April 1976, and no, that wasn't an April's fool:

I think were both right - the Squadron was working up in 76 but Im pretty sure was only declared to NATO 1/1/77  That would mean aircraft would be seen out and about throughout 1976

Your Queenie could be a HAS.1, it's hard to tell because the obvious thing to look at - the tail rotor, is such a blur.  HAS.1 has 5-blade tail rotor, HAS.2 a 6-blade tail rotor.

All of the extant HAS.1's would have been converted to HAS.2 standard, there was little other external difference between the early HAS.2 and late HAS.1's when the former came into service.  The serial number would tell you if it was built as a HAS.1 or 2.

Nice selection of subjects there.

Cheers for comments and corrections.  Somewhere I have my old spotting logs and they will help in sorting them. Regardless I hope yo are all enjoying these nostalgic pics. Next lot may be civvy but I have found some lovely Greenham '83 pics and the first Fairford in '85.  They just need 'cleaning up' and resizing to fit here.
